Introduction

The 19th century marked a significant shift in the perception and study of religion, influenced by various intellectual, cultural, and historical developments. This period saw the rise of modern biblical criticism, evolutionary theory, and the scientific revolution, which collectively reshaped the understanding of religion and its role in society. This article explores the key factors and events that contributed to the evolution of the modern view of religion from the 19th century onward, examining their impact through the lens of conservative evangelical Christian scholarship.

The Rise of Biblical Criticism

Historical Background

The 19th century witnessed the emergence of biblical criticism, particularly higher criticism, which sought to analyze the origins and development of biblical texts. This approach often questioned the traditional authorship and historical accuracy of the Scriptures, leading to significant controversies within the Christian community.

Impact on Traditional Beliefs

Higher criticism challenged the traditional view of the Bible as the inspired, inerrant Word of God. Critics like Julius Wellhausen proposed the Documentary Hypothesis, suggesting that the Pentateuch was a compilation of multiple sources rather than the work of Moses. This view undermined the historical reliability of the biblical narrative, creating a rift between conservative and liberal theologians.

Scriptural Response

From a conservative evangelical perspective, the Historical-Grammatical method remains the preferred approach to biblical interpretation. This method affirms the divine inspiration and historical accuracy of the Scriptures. As stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.” By adhering to this approach, believers maintain confidence in the integrity of the biblical text.

Evolutionary Theory and Its Religious Implications

Darwin’s Theory of Evolution

Charles Darwin’s publication of “On the Origin of Species” in 1859 introduced the theory of evolution by natural selection, which profoundly impacted the scientific and religious landscape. Darwin’s theory proposed that all species, including humans, evolved over time through natural processes, challenging the biblical account of creation.

Conflict with Creationism

The theory of evolution sparked intense debates between proponents of evolution and advocates of creationism. Many Christians viewed Darwin’s theory as a direct challenge to the biblical account of creation as described in Genesis 1-2. This conflict highlighted the tension between scientific advancements and religious beliefs.

Scriptural Affirmation of Creation

Conservative evangelical scholars affirm the biblical account of creation, emphasizing Jehovah’s role as the Creator. Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This declaration underscores the foundational belief in Jehovah as the ultimate source of all life and the universe. The Historical-Grammatical method of interpretation upholds the literal understanding of the creation narrative, rejecting evolutionary theory as incompatible with Scripture.

The Scientific Revolution and Secularization

Advancements in Science and Technology

The 19th century was characterized by rapid advancements in science and technology, leading to a growing emphasis on empirical evidence and rationalism. This period, known as the Scientific Revolution, fostered a secular worldview that often marginalized religious explanations.

Secularization of Society

As scientific discoveries expanded, many intellectuals and scholars began to adopt a secular perspective, viewing religion as increasingly irrelevant to understanding the natural world. This shift contributed to the secularization of Western society, where religious beliefs and practices were relegated to the private sphere.

Biblical Perspective on Science and Faith

From a conservative evangelical standpoint, science and faith are not inherently contradictory. Psalm 19:1 declares, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” This verse affirms that the natural world reflects Jehovah’s glory and creative power. Believers are encouraged to engage with scientific discoveries while maintaining their faith in the Creator.

The Influence of Enlightenment Philosophy

Enlightenment Rationalism

The Enlightenment, an intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th centuries, emphasized reason, individualism, and skepticism of traditional authority. These principles laid the groundwork for the modern view of religion, promoting a more critical and analytical approach to religious beliefs.

Critique of Religious Institutions

Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire and Thomas Paine criticized organized religion and its institutions, advocating for religious tolerance and freedom of thought. This critique often targeted the perceived abuses and dogmatism of religious authorities.

Biblical Foundation for Truth

Conservative evangelicals assert that true knowledge and wisdom are rooted in Jehovah’s revelation. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” By grounding their understanding in the Scriptures, believers navigate the challenges posed by Enlightenment rationalism while affirming the authority of God’s Word.

Theological Liberalism and Its Impact

Emergence of Theological Liberalism

The 19th century also saw the rise of theological liberalism, which sought to reconcile Christianity with modern scientific and philosophical developments. Theological liberals often emphasized the moral and ethical teachings of Jesus while downplaying or reinterpreting the supernatural aspects of the Bible.

Challenges to Orthodox Doctrine

Theological liberalism challenged key orthodox doctrines, such as the virgin birth, the resurrection, and the inerrancy of Scripture. This movement sought to make Christianity more palatable to the modern mind by accommodating contemporary cultural and intellectual trends.

Defense of Biblical Orthodoxy

Conservative evangelicals defend the historicity and doctrinal integrity of the Christian faith. Jude 1:3 exhorts believers to “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.” By upholding the Historical-Grammatical method, they affirm the supernatural elements of the Bible and maintain fidelity to orthodox doctrine.

The Role of Archaeology in Biblical Studies

Developments in Biblical Archaeology

The 19th century witnessed significant advancements in the field of archaeology, particularly in the Near East. Discoveries such as the Rosetta Stone and the excavation of ancient cities provided valuable insights into the historical and cultural context of the Bible.

Confirmation of Biblical Events

Archaeological findings have often corroborated the historical accuracy of biblical accounts. For instance, the discovery of the Hittite civilization, once thought to be a biblical myth, validated the references to the Hittites in the Old Testament (Genesis 15:20; 2 Samuel 11:3).

Archaeology and Faith

From a conservative evangelical perspective, archaeology serves as a valuable tool for understanding and affirming the historical reliability of the Scriptures. Joshua 24:26 records, “And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.” This verse highlights the importance of historical records and physical evidence in supporting biblical truth.

The Impact of World Wars on Religious Belief

Theological Reflection on Suffering

The devastation of the two World Wars in the 20th century prompted deep theological reflection on the problem of suffering and the role of divine providence. These global conflicts challenged the optimism of the Enlightenment and led many to question the existence and goodness of God.

Biblical Perspective on Suffering

Conservative evangelicals understand suffering within the framework of the Fall and human sinfulness. Romans 5:12 explains, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.” This perspective emphasizes that suffering is a consequence of humanity’s rebellion against Jehovah, rather than a reflection of His character.

Hope in Christ

Despite the prevalence of suffering, the Bible offers hope through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Revelation 21:4 promises, “and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” This assurance provides comfort and perspective for believers facing trials and tribulations.

The Rise of Secular Humanism

Foundations of Secular Humanism

Secular humanism emerged as a philosophical stance that emphasizes human reason, ethics, and justice while rejecting religious dogma and supernaturalism. This worldview gained prominence in the 20th century, advocating for a society based on secular principles.

Conflict with Christian Worldview

Secular humanism often stands in direct opposition to the Christian worldview, particularly in areas such as morality, the sanctity of life, and the nature of humanity. This conflict highlights the fundamental differences between a secular and a biblical understanding of the world.

Affirmation of Biblical Morality

Conservative evangelicals uphold the moral teachings of the Bible as the ultimate standard for human conduct. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” By adhering to biblical principles, believers navigate the ethical challenges posed by secular humanism and affirm Jehovah’s authority over all aspects of life.

The Influence of Psychology and Sociology

Development of Modern Psychology

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of psychology as a scientific discipline. Figures such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung explored the workings of the human mind, often offering interpretations that conflicted with traditional religious beliefs.

Sociological Perspectives on Religion

Sociologists like Émile Durkheim and Max Weber studied religion from a sociological standpoint, examining its role in society and its impact on social behavior. These perspectives often treated religion as a human construct rather than a divine revelation.

Integration of Biblical Principles

Conservative evangelicals recognize the value of psychology and sociology but emphasize the importance of integrating these fields with biblical principles. Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” By grounding psychological and sociological insights in Scripture, believers maintain a holistic understanding of human nature and behavior.

The Ecumenical Movement and Its Challenges

Origins of the Ecumenical Movement

The 20th century saw the rise of the ecumenical movement, which aimed to promote unity among different Christian denominations. This movement sought to bridge doctrinal divides and foster cooperation among various Christian groups.

Theological Concerns

While the ecumenical movement emphasized unity, it often downplayed essential doctrinal differences, leading to concerns among conservative evangelicals. The desire for unity sometimes compromised the integrity of key biblical doctrines, such as the nature of salvation and the authority of Scripture.

Commitment to Biblical Truth

Conservative evangelicals prioritize fidelity to biblical truth over ecumenical unity. Ephesians 4:14 warns, “As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming.” By upholding the Historical-Grammatical method and a literal interpretation of Scripture, believers remain steadfast in their commitment to doctrinal purity. Clearly, the Bible speaks against the practice of interfaith.

REASONING WITH OTHER RELIGIONS

The Charismatic Movement and Its Controversies

Emergence of the Charismatic Movement

The mid-20th century saw the rise of the charismatic movement, which emphasized the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and experiential worship. This movement spread rapidly across various Christian denominations, leading to significant changes in worship practices and theological emphasis.

Theological Divergence

The charismatic movement introduced practices and beliefs that often diverged from traditional evangelical theology. The emphasis on personal revelation and spiritual experiences sometimes led to doctrinal confusion and a devaluation of the authority of Scripture.

Adherence to Scriptural Authority

Conservative evangelicals emphasize the guidance of the Spirit-inspired Word of God rather than personal spiritual experiences. 2 Peter 1:21 asserts, “for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” By prioritizing the authority of Scripture, believers ensure that their faith and practice remain grounded in Jehovah’s revealed Word.

The modern view of religion has evolved significantly from the 19th century onward, influenced by various intellectual, cultural, and historical developments. The rise of biblical criticism, evolutionary theory, the scientific revolution, and secular humanism have all challenged traditional religious beliefs and practices. However, conservative evangelicals remain committed to the Historical-Grammatical method of interpretation and the authority of Scripture. By upholding these principles, believers navigate the complexities of the modern world while remaining faithful to the timeless truths of the Bible.

A Matter of Timing: Restoration of True Worship

Clearly, what was needed was restoration, the restoration of true worship! As Ecclesiastes 3:1 states, “There is an appointed time for everything.” In the first century, Jesus reactivated true worship in the form of Christianity. However, he prophesied an apostasy, stating that true Christians, like wheat, and pseudo-Christians, like weeds, would “grow together until the harvest.” At that time, angels would “collect the weeds and . . . burn them up,” while true Christians would be gathered into God’s favor (Matthew 13:24-30, 37-43). By the latter half of the 19th century, leading into the 21st century, the appointed time for this restoration of true worship was imminent.

The Life and Mission of Edward D. Andrews

Edward D. Andrews was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, in 1966. His early interest in the Bible was significantly influenced by his grandmother, who was born in 1896. Despite facing a difficult childhood and teenage years, which led him to atheism, Andrews experienced a profound transformation in his late teens and twenties. He devoted himself entirely to studying the Bible. By 1986, Andrews had received an AS in Criminal Justice, a BS in Religion, an MA in Biblical Studies, and an MDiv in Theology. He is the CEO and President of Christian Publishing House and has authored over 220 books. Additionally, Andrews is the Chief Translator of the Updated American Standard Version (UASV).

The Need for Effective Bible Teaching

While recognizing the commendable work of others in promoting the Bible, Andrews realized that simply translating, printing, and distributing Bibles and books was not enough. In 2009, he began publishing a blog with thousands of articles across 125 different Bible subject areas. He observed, “Christians were too much inclined to focus on what does my church say about this or that doctrinal view, instead of What do the Scriptures say?” He noted that too many scholars wrote books aimed at other scholars, failing to teach the Bible to the churches effectively.

Biblical Foundations Fellowship (BFF)

Biblical Foundations Fellowship (BFF) emphasizes the return to the inerrant truth of Scripture as the cornerstone of faith and practice. The New Testament is replete with directives for believers to evangelize, teach the Bible, provide answers about their faith, reason with others, explain, persuade, and defend the gospel.

Evangelize

Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Mark 16:15: “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.'”

Teach the Bible

2 Timothy 2:2: “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

Acts 5:42: “And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.”

Provide an Answer

1 Peter 3:15: “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

Reason

Acts 17:2-3: “And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead.”

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Explain

Acts 8:30-31: “So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ And he said, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?'”

Persuade

2 Corinthians 5:11: “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.”

Acts 18:4: “And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks.”

Defend

Philippians 1:16: “The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.”

Jude 1:3: “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

These verses encapsulate the New Testament’s comprehensive approach to spreading the gospel, teaching God’s Word, and engaging thoughtfully and respectfully with those inside and outside the faith.
