The Nature of Biblical Prophecy
Biblical prophecy serves as a testament to the divine inspiration and accuracy of Scripture. Prophecy in the Bible is not merely predictive; it often contains elements of forth-telling, where prophets declare Jehovah’s will and call people to repentance. However, predictive prophecy, where specific future events are foretold, demonstrates the Bible’s reliability and divine origin. Jehovah declares in Isaiah 46:9-10 (UASV), “Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”
Messianic Prophecies
The prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah are among the most compelling examples of fulfilled prophecy in the Bible. These prophecies, given hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus Christ, were fulfilled in precise detail.
Birthplace of the Messiah
Micah 5:2 (UASV) predicts, “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.” This prophecy accurately foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. This was fulfilled as recorded in Matthew 2:1 (UASV), “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem.”
Virgin Birth
Isaiah 7:14 (UASV) states, “Therefore Jehovah himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel.” This prophecy finds its fulfillment in the virgin birth of Jesus, as described in Matthew 1:22-23 (UASV): “Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by Jehovah through the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,’ which translated means, ‘God with us.'”
Suffering and Death of the Messiah
Isaiah 53 provides a detailed prophecy of the suffering and atoning death of the Messiah. Isaiah 53:5 (UASV) prophesies, “But he was pierced through for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed.” This was fulfilled in the crucifixion of Jesus, who bore the sins of humanity on the cross. The New Testament confirms this in passages such as 1 Peter 2:24 (UASV): “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”
Prophecies Concerning Nations
The Bible contains numerous prophecies concerning the rise and fall of nations, many of which have been fulfilled with remarkable accuracy.
Fall of Babylon
Isaiah 13:19-20 (UASV) predicts the destruction of Babylon: “And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride, will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation.” This prophecy was fulfilled when Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian Empire in 539 B.C.E., as documented by historical records. The site of ancient Babylon remains uninhabited to this day, confirming the prophecy’s fulfillment.
Destruction of Tyre
Ezekiel 26:3-5 (UASV) foretells the destruction of Tyre: “Therefore thus says Jehovah God, ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves. They will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers; and I will scrape her debris from her and make her a bare rock. She will be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares Jehovah God.” This prophecy was fulfilled through a series of attacks, culminating in the conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C.E. Today, the site of ancient Tyre is indeed a place for the spreading of fishing nets, as the prophet foretold.
Prophecies Concerning Israel
The Bible contains many prophecies concerning the nation of Israel, its dispersion, and eventual restoration.
Destruction and Dispersion
Deuteronomy 28:64 (UASV) predicts, “Moreover, Jehovah will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, which you or your fathers have not known.” This prophecy was fulfilled in 70 C.E. when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, and the Jewish people were scattered throughout the world.
Restoration of Israel
Ezekiel 37:21-22 (UASV) foretells the restoration of Israel: “Say to them, ‘Thus says Jehovah God, “Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel.”‘” This prophecy began to be fulfilled with the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948, a remarkable event in history, given the Jewish people’s long dispersion.
The End Times Prophecies
The Bible contains prophecies concerning the end times, many of which have yet to be fulfilled but are anticipated with great interest.
Increase in Knowledge and Travel
Daniel 12:4 (UASV) predicts, “But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.” The exponential increase in travel and knowledge in the modern era aligns with this prophecy, suggesting the nearing of the end times.
Return of Christ
The New Testament contains numerous prophecies concerning the return of Jesus Christ. Matthew 24:30 (UASV) states, “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.” This prophecy, yet to be fulfilled, is a central hope of the Christian faith, affirming the future return of Christ in glory.
Prophecies and the Life of Jesus
The life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the focal points of many fulfilled prophecies, demonstrating the coherence and reliability of the biblical narrative.
Triumphal Entry
Zechariah 9:9 (UASV) prophesies, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; he is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” This prophecy was fulfilled in the New Testament when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, as recorded in Matthew 21:4-5 (UASV): “This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: ‘Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”‘”
Betrayal for Thirty Pieces of Silver
Zechariah 11:12-13 (UASV) predicts the betrayal of the Messiah for thirty pieces of silver: “I said to them, ‘If it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!’ So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages. Then Jehovah said to me, ‘Throw it to the potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued by them.’ So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of Jehovah.” This prophecy was fulfilled when Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, as recorded in Matthew 26:14-16 (UASV): “Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?’ And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him.”
The Role of Prophecy in Christian Faith
Prophecy serves to strengthen the faith of believers by demonstrating the reliability and divine origin of Scripture. 2 Peter 1:19 (UASV) emphasizes the importance of prophecy: “So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.” Fulfilled prophecies provide a solid foundation for faith, confirming that Jehovah’s Word is true and trustworthy.
Prophecies not only confirm the past but also provide hope for the future. The anticipation of the fulfillment of end times prophecies, including the return of Christ and the establishment of Jehovah’s kingdom, gives believers a sense of purpose and urgency in their faith.
