Introduction

Worry is a common human experience that affects people from all walks of life. It can consume our thoughts, drain our energy, and rob us of peace. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the issue of worry, offering profound insights and practical guidance. By examining His teachings, we can learn how to overcome worry and live a life marked by trust and peace. This article delves into Jesus’ words and explores how we can apply His teachings to our daily lives, finding reassurance in Jehovah’s care and provision.

Understanding Worry

Worry often stems from uncertainty about the future and a lack of control over circumstances. It can manifest in various forms, such as anxiety, fear, and stress, impacting our mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. Worry tends to focus on potential problems or dangers that might occur, rather than the present moment. This preoccupation with “what ifs” can distract us from our faith and trust in Jehovah’s provision. Understanding the nature of worry is the first step in addressing it, as it allows us to recognize its source and effects, enabling us to seek the guidance and wisdom found in Jesus’ teachings.

Jesus’ Teachings on Worry

Jesus’ teachings on worry, as recorded in the Sermon on the Mount, provide profound insights into how believers should approach concerns about daily life. His discourse on worry is primarily found in Matthew 6:25-34, where He addresses the anxieties that often plague our minds and offers a clear directive to trust in Jehovah.

Matthew 6:25-34 (UASV)

The Cure for Anxiety

25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious about your soul, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his life span? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these! 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the nations eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

Keep Seeking Kingdom First

33 But be you seeking* first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own wickedness.

* The Greek verb (ζητεῖτε zeteite) indicates continuous action.

In these verses, Jesus provides several key teachings on worry:

1. The Futility of Worry (Matthew 6:25-27):

Jesus begins by highlighting the futility of worry. He points out that life is more than food and the body more than clothing. By drawing attention to the birds, which do not engage in agricultural activities yet are fed by Jehovah, Jesus underscores that worry does not contribute to solving our problems or adding to our lifespan. The rhetorical question, “Are you not worth much more than they?” emphasizes the value Jehovah places on human life and His willingness to provide for our needs.

2. Trust in Jehovah’s Provision (Matthew 6:28-30):

Jesus uses the example of the lilies of the field, which grow and thrive without human effort, to illustrate Jehovah’s provision. Even Solomon, with all his wealth, was not adorned as beautifully as these flowers. This comparison emphasizes that if Jehovah cares for the transient grass of the field, He will certainly care for His people. Jesus points out that worry is a sign of “little faith,” indicating that trust in Jehovah’s provision is crucial.

3. Prioritizing Spiritual Pursuits (Matthew 6:31-33):

Jesus advises against being anxious about basic necessities such as food, drink, and clothing. He contrasts the behavior of believers with that of the Gentiles (those who do not know Jehovah), who eagerly seek after these things. Jesus reassures that Jehovah is aware of our needs and will provide for them. Instead of fixating on material concerns, Jesus instructs us to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.” This means prioritizing our relationship with Jehovah, His will, and His righteous standards. When we do so, Jesus promises that “all these things will be added to you,” indicating that Jehovah will meet our needs as we focus on spiritual matters.

4. Living in the Present (Matthew 6:34):

Jesus concludes His teaching by advising against worrying about the future. Each day has enough trouble of its own, and worrying about tomorrow only adds to today’s burdens. By focusing on the present and trusting Jehovah for the future, we can reduce anxiety and live more peacefully. This teaching encourages us to take life one day at a time, relying on Jehovah’s daily provision and care.

In summary, Jesus’ teachings on worry in the Sermon on the Mount challenge us to shift our focus from material concerns to spiritual priorities. By trusting in Jehovah’s provision, recognizing the futility of worry, prioritizing His kingdom, and living in the present, we can overcome anxiety and experience the peace that comes from faith in Jehovah’s care.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Trusting in God’s Provision

Trusting in Jehovah’s provision involves a balanced understanding of His care and our responsibility. Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount emphasize that while we should not be anxious about our needs, we must also take practical steps to address them.

Jesus reassures us that Jehovah, as our loving Father, knows our needs and cares deeply for us. This is evident in His creation, as seen in the care provided for the birds and the lilies (Matthew 6:26-30). However, this does not imply that Jehovah will miraculously intervene in every situation or solve every problem instantly. Instead, we are called to trust in His overarching provision and guidance.

Trusting in Jehovah means understanding His principles through the Scriptures, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and applying them in our lives. This involves diligent study and correct interpretation of the Bible, allowing us to align our actions with His will. By doing so, we find wisdom and direction for our daily lives.

Additionally, acting on our prayers is a crucial aspect of trusting in Jehovah. While prayer is essential, it must be accompanied by proactive efforts. Jesus encourages us to seek Jehovah’s kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33), which involves pursuing spiritual growth, ethical living, and making wise decisions.

In summary, trusting in Jehovah’s provision is about having faith in His care, gaining understanding through His Word, and taking responsible actions. By balancing prayer with practical efforts and aligning our lives with biblical principles, we can overcome worry and live in the assurance of Jehovah’s provision.

PROMISES OF GODS GUIDANCE

Seeking First the Kingdom

Jesus’ instruction to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33) underscores the priority that believers should place on spiritual matters. This directive serves as a key principle for overcoming worry and aligning our lives with Jehovah’s will.

Seeking first the kingdom means prioritizing our relationship with Jehovah and His righteous standards above all else. It involves dedicating ourselves to understanding and living by the principles found in the Scriptures. This pursuit is not merely an intellectual exercise but a wholehearted commitment to embodying the values of Jehovah’s kingdom in our daily lives.

By focusing on Jehovah’s kingdom, we are reminded that our ultimate allegiance is to His sovereignty and purposes. This perspective helps us to view our material concerns in their proper context. When our primary goal is to serve and honor Jehovah, we can trust that He will provide for our needs as we align our lives with His will.

This principle also calls us to live out the righteousness of Jehovah. This means striving to reflect His character in our actions, decisions, and relationships. It requires us to be honest, just, compassionate, and faithful, modeling our behavior after the teachings and example of Jesus.

Furthermore, seeking first the kingdom involves active participation in the community of believers. This includes engaging in collective worship, mutual support, and service. By contributing to the spiritual well-being of others, we strengthen our own faith and encourage one another to remain focused on Jehovah’s purposes.

In practical terms, seeking first the kingdom means making daily choices that reflect our commitment to Jehovah. It involves setting priorities that favor spiritual growth, ethical integrity, and service over material gain or worldly success. By doing so, we demonstrate our trust in Jehovah’s provision and align our lives with His eternal purposes.

In conclusion, seeking first the kingdom of Jehovah requires a deliberate and sustained focus on spiritual priorities. It calls us to live righteously, engage with the community of faith, and make choices that reflect our devotion to Jehovah. By prioritizing His kingdom, we can overcome worry and live in the assurance of His care and provision.

Practical Steps to Overcome Worry

Overcoming worry involves practical steps grounded in Jesus’ teachings and the wisdom found in the Scriptures. Here are some actionable measures to help us manage anxiety and cultivate trust in Jehovah’s provision:

1. Prayer and Supplication: Consistent prayer is essential in addressing worry. Philippians 4:6-7 advises, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” By bringing our concerns to Jehovah, we can experience His peace and reassurance.

2. Meditating on Scripture: Regular meditation on Jehovah’s Word helps us internalize His promises and commands. Psalm 1:2-3 highlights the benefits of meditating on Scripture: “But his delight is in the law of Jehovah, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” This practice strengthens our faith and provides perspective on our worries.

3. Focusing on Today: Jesus teaches us to live in the present and not be overly concerned about the future. Matthew 6:34 states, “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” By focusing on the tasks and challenges of today, we can prevent the accumulation of anxiety about the unknown future.

4. Trusting in Jehovah’s Provision: Reflecting on Jehovah’s faithfulness in the past can bolster our confidence in His ongoing provision. Psalm 37:25 reminds us, “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.” Trusting in Jehovah’s consistent care helps alleviate worry about our needs.

5. Engaging in Productive Activity: Acting on our prayers and taking practical steps to address our concerns can significantly reduce worry. Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” Engaging in productive activities, helping others, and staying active can shift our focus from our worries to positive actions.

6. Seeking Support from Fellow Believers: Fellowship with other believers provides encouragement and support. Galatians 6:2 encourages us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Sharing our concerns with trusted friends or mentors can offer new perspectives and practical advice.

7. Cultivating Gratitude: Practicing gratitude helps shift our focus from what we lack to what we have. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Keeping a gratitude journal or regularly reflecting on Jehovah’s blessings can foster a positive outlook and reduce worry.

By implementing these practical steps, we can address worry effectively and grow in our trust in Jehovah. Through prayer, Scripture meditation, living in the present, trusting in Jehovah’s provision, engaging in productive activities, seeking support from fellow believers, and cultivating gratitude, we can experience the peace that comes from relying on Jehovah’s care and guidance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount offer profound guidance for addressing worry in our lives. By understanding the nature of worry and recognizing its futility, we can begin to shift our focus from anxiety to trust. Jesus’ reassurance of Jehovah’s provision, coupled with His directive to seek first the kingdom, provides a solid foundation for overcoming worry.

Trusting in Jehovah involves a balanced approach: understanding His principles through diligent study of the Scriptures, acting on our prayers, and making practical efforts to address our concerns. Seeking first the kingdom means prioritizing our spiritual growth and aligning our lives with Jehovah’s righteous standards.

By applying practical steps such as prayer, meditation on Scripture, focusing on today, trusting in Jehovah’s provision, engaging in productive activities, seeking support from fellow believers, and cultivating gratitude, we can effectively manage and reduce worry. These steps help us live in the peace and assurance that come from relying on Jehovah’s care and guidance.

As we strive to implement these teachings in our daily lives, we can find freedom from the burdens of worry and experience the profound peace that Jesus promises. Trusting in Jehovah and seeking His kingdom first will lead us to a life marked by faith, peace, and confidence in His provision.
