Jesus Christ and the Law
Jesus Christ demonstrated His trust in the authority of Scripture throughout His earthly ministry, specifically in His upholding of the Law. As stated in Matthew 5:17-18 (C.E.), “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” This declaration reveals His belief in the enduring authority and validity of the Scriptures.
Jesus Christ and Prophecy
Moreover, Jesus’ trust was evident in His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. He consistently referred to these prophecies to explain His mission. For instance, in Luke 4:16-21 (C.E.), Jesus reads from Isaiah 61:1-2 and then states, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” His acknowledgment of prophecy not only indicates His belief in its authority but also asserts His role within its context.
Jesus Christ and Scripture in Practice
Jesus also demonstrated His trust in the authority of Scripture in His teachings. He often quoted from the Old Testament, using the Scriptures as the basis of His teaching and to address the religious leaders of His time. An example can be seen in Matthew 22:29 (C.E.), where Jesus rebukes the Sadducees, saying, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of Jehovah.”
Moreover, during His temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11 C.E.), Jesus quoted Deuteronomy to counter Satan’s temptations. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah” (Deuteronomy 8:3). This shows His trust in the Scriptures as a source of spiritual strength and guidance.
Jesus Christ and the Psalms
The Psalms held significant importance to Jesus, as seen in His last words on the cross. He quoted Psalm 22:1, exclaiming, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46 C.E.). By invoking this Psalm in His moment of agony, Jesus again displayed His unwavering belief in the authority of Scripture.
In conclusion, Jesus Christ’s life and ministry were deeply rooted in the authority of Scripture. His teachings, actions, and fulfillment of prophecy reveal His profound trust in the Scriptures. As followers of Christ, we are called to also place our trust in the authority of God’s Word, learning from Jesus’ example.
