Making God’s Heart Rejoice
The primary way we can make God’s heart rejoice is through our obedience. John 14:15 expresses this straightforwardly with Jesus’ words, “If you love me, keep my commands.” This indicates that our love for God is demonstrated through our obedience to His commandments, which in turn brings joy to His heart.
“If you love me, keep my commands.” – John 14:15
Hebrews 11:6 emphasizes that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith in Jesus Christ not only saves us but also brings joy to the heart of God because it signifies our trust and reliance on Him, acknowledging His sovereignty and grace.
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6
Living a life that reflects God’s righteousness is pleasing to Him. 1 Peter 1:15-16 calls believers to be holy in all they do, mirroring God’s holiness. A life that strives for holiness and righteousness according to God’s standards brings joy to God.
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.'” – 1 Peter 1:15-16
John 15:8 mentions that bearing much fruit glorifies God and proves our discipleship. The “fruit” refers to the qualities and works produced in us by the Holy Spirit, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. A fruitful life in service to God and others makes His heart rejoice.
“This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” – John 15:8
Avoiding Making God’s Heart Hurt
Turning Away from Sin
To avoid causing God pain, we must turn away from sin. Acts 3:19 urges repentance so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Repentance involves a heartfelt turning away from sin and back to God, aligning our lives with His will.
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” – Acts 3:19
The power of our words can either bring joy or pain to God’s heart. Ephesians 4:29 instructs not to let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up. Speaking life, encouragement, and truth reflects God’s character and pleases Him.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29
Avoiding Idolatry
Idolatry, which is valuing anything more than God, deeply hurts Him. 1 John 5:21 warns believers to keep themselves from idols, emphasizing the importance of giving God the supreme place in our hearts and lives.
“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” – 1 John 5:21
Rejoicing and Protecting God’s Heart
Making God’s heart rejoice and avoiding causing Him hurt are deeply interconnected aspects of our walk with Him. Through obedience, faith, righteous living, bearing fruit, repentance, careful speech, and avoiding idolatry, we align our lives with God’s desires. Such a life not only brings joy to the heart of God but also leads us into a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with Him.
Seeking God’s Approval: A Biblical Guide
In the Christian life, seeking God’s approval is paramount, surpassing the desire for human affirmation. Scripture provides clear guidance on how believers can live in a manner that pleases God and receives His approval.
Living by Faith
Trusting in God
Hebrews 11:6 emphasizes that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Believers must believe that God exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him. This foundational faith prompts us to live in reliance on God’s promises and character.
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6
Obedience to God’s Word
Following God’s Commands
Jesus articulated the importance of obedience for those who love Him, equating love with the keeping of His commands (John 14:15). Obedience is a tangible expression of our love for God and a critical aspect of seeking His approval.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” – John 14:15
Pursuing Holiness
Being Set Apart for God
1 Peter 1:15-16 calls Christians to be holy in all aspects of life because God is holy. Pursuing holiness involves separating ourselves from sin and embodying God’s righteous standards, thus living lives that are pleasing to Him.
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” – 1 Peter 1:15-16
Bearing Fruit Through the Spirit
Reflecting Christ’s Character
Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Exhibiting these qualities in our lives is evidence of living by the Spirit and secures God’s approval.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22-23
Serving Others in Love
Demonstrating God’s Love to the World
Galatians 5:13-14 encourages believers to serve one another humbly in love, fulfilling the law of Christ. Service rooted in love is a powerful testimony of our commitment to God and His commandments, attracting His favor.
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” – Galatians 5:13
Practicing Humility
Walking Humbly with God
Micah 6:8 reveals that God requires His people to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. Humility in our walk with God aligns our hearts with His and is essential for receiving His approval.
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8
Gaining God’s Approval
Seeking God’s approval involves living by faith, obeying His Word, pursuing holiness, bearing spiritual fruit, serving others in love, and practicing humility. These biblical principles guide believers in cultivating a life that is pleasing to God, ensuring His approval over the fleeting praise of the world.
Anthropomorphism: Describing God in Human Terms
The Bible frequently uses anthropomorphism, a literary device that attributes human characteristics and emotions to God, who is Spirit (John 4:24). This method helps finite human beings understand the infinite nature of God and His ways, bridging the gap between God’s transcendence and our limited comprehension.
Facilitating Understanding
Making the Infinite Accessible
God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours, as Isaiah 55:8-9 explains, making it challenging for humans to fully grasp His essence and actions. Describing God in human terms makes His attributes and actions more relatable and understandable to us.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9
Expressing Relationship
Illustrating God’s Relational Nature
Anthropomorphic descriptions of God highlight His desire for a personal relationship with humanity. Genesis 3:8, for instance, speaks of God walking in the garden, conveying His closeness and desire for fellowship with Adam and Eve.
“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” – Genesis 3:8
Conveying Emotion
Revealing God’s Heart
The Bible attributes human emotions to God, such as love (John 3:16), compassion (Psalm 103:13), and grief (Ephesians 4:30), to reveal His care and concern for us. These expressions help believers understand God’s heart and His responses to our actions and choices.
“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.” – Psalm 103:13
Demonstrating Moral Attributes
Teaching Righteousness and Justice
Anthropomorphisms are used to exemplify God’s moral attributes, such as justice, righteousness, and holiness. Describing God as a judge (Psalm 7:11) or a king (Psalm 47:7) illustrates His authority and the standards He upholds, guiding believers in righteous living.
“God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.” – Psalm 7:11
Conclusion: The Purpose of Anthropomorphism
The use of human terms to describe God in the Bible serves multiple purposes: it makes the divine nature and attributes of God more accessible to human understanding, emphasizes His desire for a personal relationship with us, conveys His emotional engagement with the world, and illustrates His moral attributes. Anthropomorphism is a bridge that connects the human understanding to the divine, enriching our comprehension of who God is and deepening our relationship with Him. Through these descriptions, believers can relate to God in a more intimate and meaningful way, even while acknowledging the infinite vastness of His being that transcends human likeness.
