While they claim this acceptance has brought relief to many grappling with gender dysphoria when in fact it has not, it has also introduced challenges, especially in the realm of competitive sports. For young females, the inclusion of biological males identifying as female athletes has raised concerns, both ethical and physical. As a conservative Christian counselor, it is important to address the challenges that young people, particularly females aged 12-25, may face when coping with these situations. It is crucial to approach this topic with sensitivity and understanding, recognizing the potential impact it can have on individuals and the need for appropriate coping mechanisms.
The question, then, is how can one cope with such an evolving environment without compromising one’s values and beliefs?
The Real Concerns
- Physical Inequities and Risks: God designed males and females differently. These biological differences aren’t just limited to reproductive roles but extend to physical strength and stamina. In contact sports, the inclusion of biological males poses a significant physical risk to female athletes. It’s not just about fairness in competition but the very safety of participants. There have been claims that allowing males who identify as females to compete in female sports can result in unfair physical advantages, potentially leading to injuries or brain damage for biological females. It is essential to take these concerns seriously and explore ways to address them without disregarding the rights and well-being of transgender individuals.
- Loss of Opportunities: Sports isn’t merely about the joy of competition; it’s also about scholarships, career opportunities, and recognition. With biological males breaking records in female sports, the chances of biological females getting their due is dwindling. Males claiming to be female dominate female sports, taking away opportunities, trophies, scholarships, and even Olympic medals from biological females. This situation raises questions about fairness and the preservation of a level playing field in competitive sports.

Navigating the Terrain with Grace and Conviction

- Engage in Dialogue: It’s essential to create safe spaces for open conversations. This might be with your teammates, coaches, or school officials. It’s crucial to approach these conversations with respect and empathy, focusing on shared concerns rather than divisive rhetoric.
- Consider Collective Action: There’s strength in numbers. If you and your teammates share mutual concerns, consider discussing a collective response. This might include petitions, peaceful protests, or even considering not competing under certain conditions. But remember, any collective action should be approached thoughtfully and prayerfully. Nevertheless, such a collective action may bring attention to the challenges faced by biological females in sports and encourage a more comprehensive examination of the policies and guidelines in place.
- Seek Guidance: Turning to your faith during trying times can provide solace. Remember, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Turn to your church, youth group, or a trusted Christian counselor who can provide guidance rooted in biblical truth.
- Find Supportive Communities: In addition to spiritual communities, consider joining or creating support groups that share your concerns. Together, you can share experiences, resources, and coping strategies.
- Talk to a trusted adult. This could be a parent, coach, teacher, or counselor. Talking to someone you trust can help you to process your emotions and develop coping strategies. It might be that there are few trusted adults when it comes to the schools and the coaches. So, be selective about who you trust.
- Join a support group. There are a number of support groups available for female athletes who are struggling to cope with the presence of males in female sports. These groups can provide you with a safe space to share your experiences and get support from other young women who are going through the same thing.
- Get involved in advocacy. There are a number of organizations that are working to protect the rights of female athletes. You can get involved in their work by volunteering your time, donating money, or simply spreading the word about the issue.
