Why has mankind failed to solve its pressing problems like poverty, injustice, and violence? It’s a troubling question many have pondered. Although we desire peace, prosperity, and happiness, these goals seem more distant than ever.
Understanding Sin
The apostle Paul provides a significant reason, stating, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23) In other words, human sinfulness has obstructed our endeavors to achieve these noble objectives.
However, what exactly does it mean to sin? It’s not just about harming others or causing trouble. Sin has a broader scope, relating to our relationship with our Creator, Jehovah God. The word “sin” implies “missing the mark” of perfect obedience to God’s will. Thus, only God can authoritatively tell us what He views as sin, which He has revealed in the Bible.
Some Examples of Sin
Modern World’s Acceptance
Many actions now deemed acceptable are indeed sinful according to the Bible. This includes adultery, fornication, homosexuality, stealing, and others, all listed in 1 Corinthians 6:9,10.
Sinful Speech and Actions
Even if we avoid such immorality, our speech can still lead us into sin. Lying, slanderous gossip, angry speech, and reviling are all considered sinful. As James, the brother of Jesus, said, “If anyone does not stumble in word, this one is a perfect man.” (Jas. 3:2)
Failure to Act
Inaction can be sinful as well. Failing to act in a loving way toward others, or God, is also a sin. This concept is highlighted in James 4:17, teaching us that knowing what is right and failing to do it is sinful.
Wrong Attitudes
Having wrong attitudes like haughtiness, arrogance, or even wrong thoughts can be sinful. Even desiring what belongs to another person is sinful, as stated in Exodus 20:17.
The Impact of False Religion
Lastly, belonging to a false religion can lead us into sin. Revelations 18:4 warns of the sins of false religion and urges followers to abandon it.
Why Are We Sinful?
The Inheritance of Sin
We are inherently sinful due to the legacy left by Adam and Eve. Since they chose to rebel against God, they passed on sinful tendencies to their descendants. This concept is captured in Romans 5:12, where Paul explains how sin entered the world through Adam.
This inheritance of sin makes it almost impossible for us to avoid sinning entirely. The apostle Paul admitted this struggle in Romans 7:19, stating, “The good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want!” We all share this dilemma.
The Consequences
The result has been disastrous. Our inherent sinfulness has led to pollution, poverty, injustice, and more. Moreover, we face a bleak reality: “The wages of sin is death.” (Rom. 6:23)
The Way Forward
Is there no hope? Must we always be hampered by our weaknesses? Thankfully, the answer is no. There is help available through Jesus Christ. Paul’s heartfelt cry in Romans 7:24,25 reveals the solution: “Miserable man that I am! Who will rescue me from the body undergoing this death? Thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” This realization of our dependence on God’s grace is the key to overcoming our sinful nature. Through Christ, we can find redemption and begin to move closer to our highest dreams and aspirations.
