The early Christians lived under the rule of the Roman Empire during a time when paganism was the dominant religion. Despite facing persecution and opposition, these Christians remained faithful to their commission to spread the gospel and make disciples of people from all nations. At the time, there were only 120 Christians, but their numbers quickly grew to thousands, and their work expanded as they traveled from place to place, establishing congregations in major cities and spreading the message into rural areas.
Daniel 2:31-45; 7:1-8; Revelation 17:9-11: Six Kingdoms Foretold by Daniel and Eight Kings Foretold by John
The early Christians were distinct from the pagan Romans in many ways. They believed in one true God, Jehovah, and did not have stately temples or famous statues or shrines like the pagan Romans did. They also had no formalism or paid priesthood, and their teachings, such as the importance of marriage, cleanliness, honesty, justice, peace, love, mercy, and forgiveness, were seen as “turning the world upside down.”
Despite facing opposition and persecution from the pagan Romans, early Christians remained steadfast in their faith and obedience to God. They refused to worship the emperor or participate in pagan religious practices, which made them unpopular with the ruling elements and often led to outbreaks of violence and persecution. However, they were still loyal and obedient to the state in all matters not pertaining to worship and were known for their respect for government and law and order.
Clash of Culture Christianity vs Rome
Despite the fact that they were good, peaceful people, the early Christians faced intense persecution because they refused to bow down and worship the state and its man-made god, the deified emperor. They were seen as a threat to the pagan Roman way of life, and their gospel message was seen as something to be proclaimed openly, not kept secret.
In conclusion, the early Christians lived during a time of great opposition and persecution, but they remained faithful to their commission and their obedience to God. Despite facing persecution, they continued to spread the gospel and made a positive impact on the pagan Roman world.
