far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. (Ephesians 1:21)
Far above all rule and authority. The general sense in this verse is, that God has put his Son as the King of the heavenly Kingdom government and has given him all authority and power to carry out his divine will and purposes. Jesus was exalted to the highest imaginable place of dignity and honor. (Matt 28:18 Phil. 2:9-11; Col. 2:10. Again, what Paul means is that God had demonstrated his great power when he exalted Jesus. It would be this same power was displayed in raising up the sinner out of his sinful state and eventually eternal death to the Christian life now and eternal life to come, and that he is honored to know this. Christians need to know the magnitude and the glory of the power exhibited in their salvation.
The Greek word (ὑπεράνω huperanō) rendered far above has the meaning above as a status, high above, or greatly exalted. Jesus was not merely above the positions of the heavenly creatures as the king of God’s Kingdom; he was not one among the spirit creatures of their own status. He was not raised up a little above them, but he was vastly exalted high above them, holding a position of a different kind altogether, one of honor and dignity. This would not be possible if he were a mere man; or if he were a spirit creature like the angels. The Greek word (ἀρχή archē) rendered rule means supernatural power, first place, dominion, preeminence. Christ is exalted above all; Christ rules above all.
And power. The sense of this Greek word (δύναμις dunamis) here is, supernatural power, as Christ is elevated above all levels of spirit creatures, even the archangel Michael, exalted so highly, there really is no name by which it may be known. The Scriptures clearly have different ranks among the angels: seraphs, cherubs, and the archangel, but the authors do not define this specifically; it must be extrapolated. Christ is not even of this order or kind; he has been elevated above all that there is or will ever be.
And dominion. The Greek (κυριότης kuriotēs) is the state of having majestic dominion or ownership through authority, as all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus Christ. He has ruling power, supernatural power, celestial dominion, and authority.
And every name that is named. Again, there really is no name by which his position and authority may be known.
Not only in this age. Christ has been exalted while humanity is under satanic rulership and during Christ’s thousand-year reign.
But also in the one to come. This refers to Christ’s reign from heaven, the thousand-year reign of Christ. After the millennial reign of Christ, “then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when he has abolished all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death. For he put all things in subjection under his feet. But when he says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is evident that he is excepted who put all things in subjection to him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to him, so that God may be all in all.” – 1 Corinthians 15:24-28.
