46 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
—Psalm 46:1
Covenant blessings are not meant to be looked at only, but to be appropriated. Even our Lord Jesus is given to us for our present use. Believer, you do not make use of Christ as you ought to do. When you are in trouble, why do you not tell him all your grief? Has he not a sympathizing heart, and can he not comfort and relieve you? No, you are going about to all your friends, not your best Friend, and telling your difficulties everywhere, even to the world on social media, except into the bosom of your Lord in a private conversation with God. Are you struggling with this day’s secret sins? Here is a fountain filled with the blood of Christ blood: use it, believer, use it. Has a sense of guilt come upon you? The pardoning grace of Jesus may be proved again and again. Come to him at once for cleansing. Have you failed to do what you ought to be doing? Do you deplore your weakness? He is your strength: why not lean upon him? Do you feel alone even though surrounded by friends? Come and truly depend on your friendship with Jesus Christ. Do not make a showy display of your friendship with God with constant hollow words, but go to God in private. Strip off your self-righteousness, and your fears: put on the new personality that God gave you. Do you feel spiritually weak at times? Use the power of prayer, and then act on behalf of your prayer! Therein you will find the answer that will revive you. At times, you may be poor in spirit, but then you have a Savior, a mighty God who can give you strength beyond what is normal. Learn how to cultivate the Holy Spirit. Go to the Father and have a real conversation privately where you can scream, yell, cry, talk, reason, implore, and discover the love that you had at first. There is nothing God despises more than for his servant to make a showy display of their relationship with him, and not go to him with their heart in their hand with no one being able to see or hear. He loves to be implored by you. The more burdens we put on his shoulders privately, the more special he will become to us. Stop using witty words on social media with the intent of showing others how wise or righteous you are. Instead, go for a walk in the park or the cemetery in the morning, where no one is there but you and God, and talk to him, really talk to him.
