A Refreshing Prayer

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence (Isaiah 64:1)

Here is a prayer for refreshing. It expresses a heartfelt desire for a powerful manifestation of God’s presence. A prayer for refreshing is always a refreshing prayer to the one who prays it and to those who listen to it. But I would go as far as to say that it is refreshing to God. It pleases God to hear the prayer that goes beyond shopping list petitions. It pleases God to see men and women who have hearts that desire more of him. Isaiah looks back at what God had done, and he is inspired to believe that God can do it again. Oh, that God would open the windows of heaven and pour a blessing out upon us! Many of God’s people are so busy following fashions and passions that they have little appetite for God. Here is a prayer for God’s presence. It is an expression of deep longing. It is not a half-hearted and cold-blooded prayer. It is good to remind ourselves of God’s past interventions in the lives of his people. We can look back at the great revivals when God opened the windows of heaven and poured out a blessing! God can do the unexpected. When the people of God came to the Red Sea God intervened by opening up that sea, and he delivered them in an unexpected way. In the wilderness, God fed his people in an unexpected way with the bread of heaven (manna).

He gave them water from a rock. That too was unexpected. How much do we want to see a fresh manifestation of God in our society? Will we dare to expect the unexpected? Will we pray that the awesome majesty of the Almighty God might be revealed to many in an unmistakable way?

We cannot ascend to the heavenly places, but God can come down to us.
