What Are the Consequences of Despising Instruction?

Proverbs 13:13 states, “Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command is rewarded.” This verse presents a clear contrast between those who reject wisdom and those who embrace it. It highlights the consequences of disregarding guidance, showing that rejecting instruction leads to ruin while respecting and following godly wisdom brings blessings. The principle here applies not only to everyday decisions but also to one’s relationship with Jehovah and His Word.

The first part of the verse, “Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it,” warns about the dangers of rejecting guidance. The Hebrew word for “scorns” (buz) conveys an attitude of contempt or disdain. This describes a person who refuses to listen to correction, believing they do not need instruction. Proverbs 1:7 reinforces this idea: “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Those who reject godly wisdom set themselves up for failure, as they walk blindly into the consequences of their own arrogance.

The Bible provides many examples of individuals who suffered because they despised instruction. One of the clearest is King Saul. Jehovah commanded him to completely destroy the Amalekites, but he partially obeyed, sparing King Agag and the best of the livestock (1 Samuel 15:9). When confronted by the prophet Samuel, Saul made excuses rather than humbly accepting correction. As a result, Jehovah rejected him as king (1 Samuel 15:23). His failure to respect Jehovah’s command led to his downfall, illustrating the truth of Proverbs 13:13—those who despise instruction will face consequences.

In contrast, the second half of the verse states, “But whoever respects a command is rewarded.” This shows that humility and obedience lead to blessing. The word “respects” (yare) implies reverence and careful attention to instruction. Proverbs 10:8 supports this principle: “The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.” Those who listen to correction and follow godly wisdom receive the benefits of right living.

A biblical example of this truth is found in Noah. When Jehovah commanded him to build an ark, he obeyed completely, even when the task seemed unreasonable (Genesis 6:22). Because he respected Jehovah’s command, he and his family were saved from the flood. His obedience brought reward, demonstrating that those who follow Jehovah’s instructions are ultimately blessed.

Jesus reinforced the importance of obeying divine instruction in Matthew 7:24-25: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Those who respect Jehovah’s commands build their lives on a firm foundation, ensuring stability and security.

Ultimately, Proverbs 13:13 teaches that rejecting wisdom leads to destruction, while embracing instruction leads to reward. Those who refuse to listen will face the consequences of their pride, but those who humbly accept correction will experience the blessings that come from following Jehovah’s guidance. This principle encourages believers to seek wisdom, remain teachable, and trust that Jehovah’s commands always lead to what is best.
