The inerrancy of the Bible is foundational to the Christian faith, as it establishes the absolute authority of Scripture in all matters of doctrine, practice, and life. The doctrine of inerrancy affirms that the Bible, being inspired by God, is free from error in its original manuscripts. This belief is grounded in the nature of God Himself and is supported by the teachings of Jesus Christ, the writings of the apostles, and the testimony of the Holy Spirit. Each member of the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—provides a distinct yet harmonious argument for the inerrancy of Scripture. To deny the Bible’s inerrancy is to undermine its divine authority and the truth of its message.
The Argument From God the Father
The Bible is the Word of God, and its inerrancy is inseparable from the character of God the Father. The Scriptures consistently affirm that God cannot lie or err. As the source of all truth, Jehovah’s words are inherently trustworthy and perfect.
The writer of Hebrews declares, “God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged” (Hebrews 6:18). This passage emphasizes that God’s promises and purposes are unalterable and truthful, rooted in His unchanging nature. Similarly, Paul wrote to Titus, “In hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time” (Titus 1:2). The apostle here underscores the trustworthiness of God’s promises, which form the basis of our faith and hope.
The psalmist also affirms the reliability of God’s Word, stating, “The words of Jehovah are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times” (Psalm 12:6). Furthermore, Psalm 119:160 declares, “The entirety of your word is truth, and all your righteous judgments endure forever.” These verses reflect the perfection and enduring nature of God’s Word, which cannot fail or contain error.
Jesus Himself prayed, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). This prayer confirms that the Scriptures are the ultimate standard of truth, reflecting the very nature of God. Since God cannot err and the Bible is His Word, it follows that the Bible is without error.
The Argument From God the Son
Jesus Christ, as the Son of God, affirmed the inerrancy and divine authority of Scripture. His teachings and actions reveal His absolute trust in the Bible as the infallible Word of God. To deny the inerrancy of Scripture is to deny the testimony of Christ Himself.
Jesus consistently referred to the Old Testament as authoritative and divinely inspired. For instance, He declared, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished” (Matthew 5:17–18). In this statement, Jesus affirmed the enduring authority of Scripture down to its smallest details.
When confronted by Satan in the wilderness, Jesus relied on the authority of Scripture, saying, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4; cf. Deuteronomy 8:3). By quoting the Word of God, Jesus demonstrated its sufficiency and inerrancy in guiding and sustaining believers.
In John 10:35, Jesus made a profound statement about the reliability of Scripture, saying, “The Scripture cannot be broken.” This declaration underscores the unity and inviolability of the Bible as the Word of God. Jesus’ complete trust in Scripture as the inerrant revelation of God establishes its divine authority and accuracy.
Moreover, Jesus often used the phrase “it is written” to validate the truthfulness of the Scriptures (e.g., Matthew 21:13; Mark 11:17; Luke 24:46). These instances highlight His acknowledgment of the Bible’s divine origin and inerrancy.
The Argument From God the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit, as the Spirit of truth, is the divine agent through whom the Scriptures were inspired. The Bible is not merely a collection of human writings but is the product of divine revelation, authored by men who were guided by the Spirit of God.
Peter emphasizes this divine origin in his second epistle: “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:20–21). This passage clarifies that the Holy Spirit was the source of the prophetic message, ensuring its accuracy and truth.
Paul similarly affirms the divine inspiration of Scripture, stating, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). The term “God-breathed” (Greek: θεόπνευστος, theopneustos) signifies that the Scriptures are the very breath of God, conveying His perfect and inerrant Word.
David, inspired by the Spirit, testified to this truth, saying, “The Spirit of Jehovah spoke through me; his word was on my tongue” (2 Samuel 23:2). Here, David acknowledges that his writings were not merely his own thoughts but were the result of divine inspiration.
The Holy Spirit is also referred to as “the Spirit of truth” (John 16:13). While this passage refers specifically to the apostles’ guidance in receiving and transmitting Jesus’ teachings, it highlights the Spirit’s role in ensuring the accuracy of divine revelation. As the Spirit of truth, He cannot produce error, and the Scriptures, being His work, are likewise free from error.
Conclusion
The inerrancy of the Bible is a logical and theological necessity, rooted in the character of God the Father, the testimony of God the Son, and the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit. Since God cannot lie or err, and since the Bible is the Word of God, it follows that the Bible cannot contain errors. This truth is affirmed throughout Scripture, demonstrating its divine origin, reliability, and authority.
The Bible’s inerrancy does not rest on human opinion but on the unchanging nature of God, who is the ultimate source of truth. Jesus Christ affirmed the authority and inerrancy of Scripture, and the Holy Spirit ensured its accuracy through divine inspiration. To reject the inerrancy of the Bible is to reject the trustworthiness of God Himself.
In light of these truths, Christians must uphold the Bible as the ultimate standard of truth and guide for all aspects of life. The Word of God is “living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12), and it remains the foundation of faith and practice for all who seek to follow Jehovah faithfully.
