FEATURED IMAGE: The young liberal progressive socialist-communist Chileans using the disparity between the wealthy and the poor to destroy a country because they want to adopt a communist constitution. Sadly, the conservative Christian is reactive instead of being proactive. How have the young people around the world become so in favor of a progressive liberal socialist communist mindset? It has been decades in the making from school teachers to college and university professors. Christian parents need to train their youth in the Word of God and to love the Word of God.
The Nature of Worldly Wisdom: What Is It?
The phrase “the wisdom of this world” occurs in the Bible to distinguish the so-called wisdom of humans from the wisdom that comes from Jehovah God. The apostle Paul emphasizes this distinction in 1 Corinthians 3:19: “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, ‘He is the one who catches the wise in their craftiness.’” This verse sets the tone for a discussion on how the human perspective—particularly when it denies or opposes divine revelation—is ultimately flawed and futile.
The wisdom of this world encompasses philosophies, ideologies, and systems of thought that reject God’s sovereignty, His moral standards, and His inspired Word. This kind of wisdom often masquerades as sophisticated, progressive, and liberating, yet it is rooted in human arrogance and ignorance. Paul earlier writes, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” (1 Corinthians 1:20). The “wise” of this world fail to understand spiritual truth because their thinking is limited to what is temporal and earthly.
Worldly wisdom has existed throughout human history, beginning with the rebellion of Adam and Eve. Satan’s deceitful words to Eve in Genesis 3:1—“Indeed, has God said…?”—illustrate the foundation of such thinking. By sowing doubt about God’s truth, Satan introduced the idea that human beings could rely on their own wisdom to determine what is good and evil, a mindset that continues to shape modern ideologies.
Jehovah’s wisdom, by contrast, is eternal, unchanging, and trustworthy. It begins with reverence for Him, as Proverbs 9:10 explains: “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Any system of thought that ignores or rejects God’s existence and authority is inherently foolish, regardless of how intelligent it may appear.
The Moral Decay of Society: A Testimony to the Folly of Worldly Wisdom
One of the clearest ways the wisdom of the world manifests itself is in its shifting moral standards. Over the past century, there has been a dramatic erosion of traditional biblical values, particularly in the areas of marriage, family, and sexual morality. At the beginning of the 20th century, societal norms generally aligned more closely with biblical teachings. For instance, sexual relations were widely recognized as appropriate only within marriage, and marriage itself was understood as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman.
However, as the decades progressed, these standards began to erode under the influence of worldly philosophies. The 1920s, often referred to as the “Roaring Twenties,” marked a cultural shift characterized by increasing permissiveness. Dance styles, fashion, and entertainment reflected a growing disregard for modesty and self-control. By the 1960s, the so-called “sexual revolution” brought about an open rejection of biblical morality. Cohabitation without marriage became normalized, divorce rates soared, and homosexual conduct gained acceptance.
Today, the wisdom of the world goes even further, celebrating and promoting lifestyles that are explicitly condemned in Scripture. The LGBT movement, for example, not only defends but also demands societal approval of behaviors that violate God’s design for human sexuality. The Bible is unequivocal on these matters: “Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals…will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Yet, in the name of tolerance and personal freedom, such practices are celebrated as virtuous.
The root cause of this moral decay is humanity’s rejection of Jehovah’s authority. Romans 1:21-22 describes this downward spiral: “For even though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” This rejection of God leads to a distorted view of human nature and an embrace of behaviors that bring spiritual and often physical harm.
The Danger of Conforming to the World
For Christians, the pervasive influence of worldly wisdom presents a constant challenge. The apostle Paul warns in Romans 12:2, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Conformity to the world involves adopting its values, priorities, and ways of thinking, all of which are opposed to God’s will.
The wisdom of the world often appeals to our sinful inclinations, making it deceptively attractive. James 3:14-15 contrasts godly wisdom with worldly wisdom: “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.” The characteristics of worldly wisdom—pride, selfishness, and sensuality—are incompatible with the humility and selflessness that God desires.
In practical terms, conforming to the world can take many forms. It may involve compromising biblical convictions to fit in with societal norms, pursuing material wealth and success at the expense of spiritual growth, or prioritizing entertainment and pleasure over serving Jehovah. Jesus himself warned of the dangers of such compromise: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24).
The Wisdom of God: A Superior Path
In contrast to the fleeting and flawed wisdom of the world, the wisdom that comes from Jehovah is perfect and life-giving. James 3:17 describes it as follows: “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” This wisdom is rooted in God’s character and revealed through His Word, providing guidance for every aspect of life.
One of the primary ways Christians can access God’s wisdom is through diligent study of the Scriptures. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” By immersing ourselves in the Bible, we can develop the discernment needed to navigate the complexities of life and resist the influence of worldly thinking. Furthermore, prayer is essential in seeking Jehovah’s wisdom. James 1:5 assures us, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
God’s wisdom also leads to a proper understanding of human nature and our purpose. While the world encourages self-exaltation, Jehovah calls us to humility and service. Philippians 2:3-4 exhorts believers, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”
Final Thoughts: Standing Firm in a World of Deception
As Christians, we must remain vigilant against the subtle and overt influences of the world’s wisdom. This requires an unwavering commitment to Jehovah and His Word, as well as a willingness to stand apart from the prevailing culture. Jesus prayed for his disciples, saying, “I do not ask you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John 17:15-16).
By relying on God’s wisdom, we can avoid the snares of worldly thinking and live lives that honor Him. This involves daily renewal of our minds, active engagement with Scripture, and a steadfast focus on the eternal rather than the temporary. As Paul reminds us, “For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).
Let us, then, heed the warning of 1 Corinthians 3:19 and not be fooled by “the wisdom of this world.” Instead, may we wholeheartedly pursue the wisdom that comes from Jehovah, which alone leads to life and peace.
