The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:16, “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” This is not a mystical statement, nor is it some secret spiritual experience hidden from the majority of believers. Rather, Paul is teaching that Christians, by means of the Spirit-inspired Word of God, can think, reason, and act in harmony with Christ Himself. Having the mind of Christ is not about Christ mystically dwelling inside the believer, nor is it about a mysterious indwelling of the Holy Spirit guiding Christians apart from Scripture. Instead, it is about the Christian being fully shaped and governed by the Word of God, which is the only revelation of the thoughts of Christ. The more a believer grows in accurate knowledge of the Bible, the more his or her thinking, decisions, and behavior will align with the way Jesus thought and acted.

The Contrast Between the World’s Wisdom and the Mind of Christ

In the context of 1 Corinthians 2, Paul is contrasting the wisdom of the world with the wisdom of God. Human wisdom, whether philosophical, religious, or cultural, is fundamentally limited and corrupted by sin. It cannot perceive the truth of God on its own. The so-called “wise” of the world fail to see God’s purposes because they are blinded by pride and rebellion. Paul makes it clear that “the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor. 2:14).

By contrast, those who have devoted themselves to the Word of God have access to the revealed wisdom of Christ. This is why Paul declares that Christians “have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16). It is not that the believer possesses Christ’s divine mind in some mystical sense, but rather that God has revealed His thoughts in Scripture, and when believers rightly understand and apply those inspired words, they think as Christ thinks. To be biblically minded is to be Christ-minded.

The Mind of Christ as Grounded in Scripture

The phrase “the mind of Christ” cannot be separated from the inspired Scriptures. Christ’s thoughts are perfectly revealed in His teachings, in His actions recorded by the evangelists, and in the Spirit-inspired writings of His apostles. To know what Christ thinks on any matter is to know what the Bible says about that matter. Thus, to have the mind of Christ is to immerse oneself in the Bible, to allow its teachings to saturate the heart and shape the decision-making process.

Philippians 2:5 provides further clarity: “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.” Paul calls Christians to think and act as Christ did. In that passage, the specific aspect of Christ’s mind is His humility and self-sacrifice. He did not act in selfish ambition or pride but willingly humbled Himself to serve and to obey the Father, even to death on the cross. When believers study the Scriptures and learn the example of Christ, they then reflect His mindset in their daily lives.

Transformation Through the Renewal of the Mind

Romans 12:2 connects the transformation of the Christian life with the renewal of the mind: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” The renewed mind is one that no longer operates according to the values, priorities, and reasoning of the sinful world but is reshaped by the truths of God’s Word. This renewal is not automatic, nor is it mystical. It requires diligent study, meditation, and application of Scripture. The more the Word fills the believer’s heart and directs his choices, the more he begins to think as Christ thinks.

Having the mind of Christ, therefore, is not about feelings, impressions, or inner voices. It is about knowing the Bible so well that one’s entire reasoning process is governed by divine revelation. This requires discipline, a constant feeding on the Scriptures, and a commitment to obeying what is revealed.

The Role of Discernment in Having the Mind of Christ

A crucial aspect of possessing the mind of Christ is discernment. In Hebrews 5:14, the inspired writer says, “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” Spiritual maturity is directly connected to having one’s mind shaped by the Word of God so that good and evil can be rightly discerned. Jesus perfectly demonstrated this in His life. When faced with Satan’s temptations in the wilderness, He did not rely on mystical experiences but responded with the written Word of God, saying repeatedly, “It is written” (Matt. 4:4, 7, 10). His mind was always aligned with the Father’s will as revealed in Scripture, and that is precisely the model for believers.

When Christians immerse themselves in the Bible, they begin to filter every choice, every desire, and every plan through the lens of God’s truth. Decisions about morality, relationships, work, service, and even personal attitudes are weighed against the teachings of Scripture. In this way, the Christian no longer thinks like the world but thinks like Christ.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

The Mind of Christ and Humble Obedience

One of the most defining features of Christ’s mindset was His obedience to the Father. Philippians 2 emphasizes that Christ, though in the form of God, did not cling to His divine rights but humbled Himself to the point of death. His every thought and action were governed by perfect obedience to Jehovah’s will. John 4:34 records Jesus saying, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.” That statement reveals the essence of His mindset—complete devotion to doing God’s will as revealed in Scripture.

For Christians today, having the mind of Christ means cultivating that same spirit of obedience. Every decision is not based on self-interest but on the revealed will of God. It means setting aside selfish ambition, pride, and worldly desires, and instead living in submission to Scripture, regardless of the cost.

The Mind of Christ in Spiritual Warfare

Having the mind of Christ is essential in spiritual warfare. Satan seeks to corrupt the believer’s thinking with lies, distortions, and falsehoods. He blinds the minds of unbelievers (2 Cor. 4:4), and he seeks to mislead even the faithful. The defense against such deception is the truth of God’s Word. Paul describes this in 2 Corinthians 10:5, where he writes of destroying arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and of taking every thought captive to obey Christ.

When Christians fill their minds with Scripture, they arm themselves with the very truth of Christ, which exposes Satan’s lies and fortifies them against deception. Without the mind of Christ, a believer is vulnerable to worldly philosophies, false teachers, and sinful reasoning. With the mind of Christ, however, every thought can be measured against the Word of God and either accepted or rejected on that basis.

Growing in the Mind of Christ

Possessing the mind of Christ is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. The believer must grow continually in Bible knowledge and application. Colossians 3:16 urges, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.” The Word must dwell richly, abundantly, and deeply in the believer’s heart. Only then can one’s thoughts consistently reflect the thoughts of Christ.

This growth requires personal study, meditation on Scripture, prayer for wisdom, and active obedience to what is learned. It also requires humility to be corrected by Scripture, even when it challenges long-held personal opinions or cultural assumptions. In this way, the Christian becomes increasingly biblically minded, and therefore increasingly Christ-minded.

The Practical Outworking of the Mind of Christ

To have the mind of Christ is to live out biblical truth in everyday decisions. It means loving others with selfless humility, just as Christ loved. It means choosing integrity over compromise, truth over error, and holiness over sin. It means responding to difficulty with trust in God’s sovereignty rather than despair. It means filtering every opinion, every reaction, and every ambition through the lens of God’s Word.

This is not a mystical reality but a practical one. A Christian with the mind of Christ will naturally ask: What does the Bible say about this? How would Jesus respond according to the Scriptures? What has God revealed about the right course of action? The answers to those questions form the foundation of a Christlike mindset.
