GODLY WISDOM SPEAKS Wives_02 HUSBANDS - Love Your Wives

The Weight of a Husband’s Spiritual Responsibility

Christian husbands occupy a role that is both privileged and weighty. Ephesians 5:25 commands, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” This is not a casual call to affection but a mandate to model the sacrificial, purifying love of Christ Himself. That love is not built on mere feelings or romantic gestures but is anchored in the truth of God’s Word. A husband cannot fulfill this responsibility without knowing, applying, and leading through Scripture. Without diligent study, a man risks leading his family by personal opinion rather than divine truth.

In 1 Peter 3:7, husbands are told to “live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.” This passage presents a sobering reality: a failure to know and live by God’s Word does not just weaken your leadership—it can place a spiritual barrier between you and God Himself.

The Danger of Neglecting Scripture as a Husband

The neglect of Scripture is not simply an academic lapse; it is spiritual negligence. Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you from serving as My priest.” The principle applies here: the priestly role of a husband—interceding for and guiding his family—crumbles when knowledge of the Word is absent.

Many Christian husbands assume they can simply “wing it” spiritually, leaning on general biblical familiarity or relying on what they hear on Sunday mornings. This shallow approach leaves them unable to confront the cultural lies that bombard their wives and children. Instead of equipping their household with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), they hand them paper shields against the onslaught of deception.

The consequences ripple outward. A husband who does not study God’s Word risks making poor decisions, tolerating sin in the home, mishandling conflicts, and failing to train his children in godliness. Even well-intentioned advice, if not grounded in sound doctrine, can lead a family down a spiritually dangerous path.

Biblical Leadership Begins With Biblical Knowledge

In the early church, elders were required to be “holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict” (Titus 1:9). While not every husband is called to be an elder in the congregation, every husband is called to lead his household in truth. If an elder is disqualified without a strong grip on the Word, how can a husband believe he can lead his home effectively without it?

Joshua 1:8 gives God’s formula for successful spiritual leadership: “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.” The prosperity in view is not financial gain but spiritual health, stability, and obedience—exactly what a family needs from its leader.

The Illusion of “Enough” Knowledge

One of the most subtle dangers for Christian husbands is assuming they already know enough. This prideful assumption blinds them to the depth and richness of Scripture. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as “living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit… able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” If the Word is this alive and penetrating, how can anyone think they have exhausted its truths?

When husbands stop learning, they stop leading effectively. Over time, they recycle shallow advice, resort to clichés, or worse—default to worldly reasoning disguised as Christian wisdom. The result is spiritual stagnation at best and gradual compromise at worst.

The Accountability of the Husband Before God

In Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve sinned, God addressed Adam first (Genesis 3:9). Even though Eve took the first bite, Adam was held responsible for the state of the household. This was not merely because he was physically present but because he bore the role of spiritual headship. A Christian husband today should expect the same accountability.

2 Corinthians 5:10 reminds us, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” Husbands will answer for the spiritual condition of their homes, including whether they diligently taught and modeled the Word of God.

Practical Steps for Husbands Who Have Neglected Study

The call to study Scripture is not a vague suggestion; it is a mandate with specific, practical outworkings. A husband who realizes he has failed in this area should take decisive action immediately. Set a daily time for personal Bible study—without phones, without distractions. Use a solid literal translation, not paraphrases or versions that dilute meaning. Seek understanding of the historical and grammatical context of each passage before making application.

Pair personal study with family Scripture time. This should be more than reading a single verse before bed—it should involve explanation, discussion, and prayer. By doing this, a husband fulfills the command of Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”

Guarding Against Doctrinal Error

Without careful study, husbands are vulnerable to adopting error without realizing it. This is why Paul repeatedly warned believers to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). In an age where podcasts, social media influencers, and untrained online “preachers” dominate Christian conversation, discernment must be sharpened by the continual intake of God’s Word.

Doctrinal error is rarely blatant at first—it often comes dressed in partial truths. A husband unfamiliar with Scripture is less likely to detect the deception and more likely to allow falsehood to take root in the home.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

The Reward of Faithful Study

While this message has focused heavily on warning, it is important to remember that the husband who studies and applies God’s Word will see blessings beyond what he imagined. Psalm 1 describes the man who delights in the law of Jehovah as being “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” That stability will overflow into his marriage, his children, and his personal walk with God.

A husband’s leadership will become more confident—not in himself, but in God’s truth. His decisions will be shaped by eternal principles rather than passing trends. His wife will find reassurance in his spiritual steadiness, and his children will learn from example what it means to walk with God faithfully.

A Final Word to Christian Husbands

If you are a Christian husband who has neglected serious, consistent study of God’s Word, you are standing on dangerous spiritual ground. You cannot lead your home faithfully without knowing what God has said. Your role is not merely to provide materially or protect physically—it is to guard the souls under your care with truth.

The call to repentance and renewal in this area is urgent. Begin today. Open the Scriptures, humble yourself before God, and commit to growing in your understanding so that you can rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Your family needs more than your good intentions—they need you to be a man of the Book.
