Daily Devotional on Isaiah 60:22
Jehovah Will Accomplish It in Its Time
The prophet Isaiah concludes Isaiah 60 with a powerful declaration of divine sovereignty and perfect timing: “The smallest one will become a clan, and the least one a mighty nation. I, Jehovah, will hasten it in its time” (Isa. 60:22). This verse rests within a broader prophetic vision of restoration and glory for Zion, pointing forward to the ultimate fulfillment of Jehovah’s covenant purposes. It affirms two foundational truths: Jehovah multiplies what appears insignificant, and He accomplishes His purposes precisely according to His timetable.
Isaiah ministered in Judah during a period of political instability and moral decline. Outwardly, the nation was vulnerable; inwardly, it was compromised by idolatry and injustice. Yet Jehovah revealed a future in which the faithful remnant would experience expansion and blessing. The phrase “the smallest one will become a clan” reflects a reversal of weakness. What the world views as minor, Jehovah transforms into something influential. This principle is consistent throughout Scripture. In Judges 6:15, Gideon described his clan as the weakest in Manasseh, yet Jehovah used him to deliver Israel. First Corinthians 1:27 confirms, “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.” Divine power operates independently of human strength.
The promise of multiplication connects directly to the Abrahamic covenant established in 2091 B.C.E., when Jehovah told Abraham, “I will make you a great nation” (Gen. 12:2). Though Abraham and Sarah were initially childless, Jehovah fulfilled His word. The growth from a single family to a nation testifies to His covenant faithfulness. Isaiah 60:22 echoes that historical pattern, reinforcing that divine promises are not hindered by present limitations.
The latter clause—“I, Jehovah, will hasten it in its time”—emphasizes divine timing. The Hebrew construction underscores certainty and exclusivity. Jehovah alone determines when fulfillment occurs. He does not act prematurely, nor does He delay beyond what is necessary for His purpose. Ecclesiastes 3:1 affirms, “There is an appointed time for everything.” Human impatience often arises because individuals measure progress by visible results. Jehovah measures progress according to His eternal plan.

This truth guards believers from discouragement. In a world influenced by Satan and characterized by human imperfection, progress toward righteousness may appear slow. Yet 2 Peter 3:9 declares, “The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you.” Divine patience reflects mercy, not neglect. Jehovah’s timing allows opportunity for repentance and spiritual growth. The expansion described in Isaiah 60 ultimately anticipates the Messianic reign, when Christ will return before the thousand-year rule, establishing righteous governance over the earth.
Isaiah 60 also contains imagery of light overcoming darkness. Verse 2 states, “For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; but Jehovah will rise upon you.” Darkness represents moral corruption and spiritual blindness. Light signifies divine truth. Jesus Christ identified Himself as “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Through His sacrificial death in 33 C.E., He provided the basis for redemption and future restoration. The growth promised in verse 22 depends entirely on that redemptive foundation.
Believers today must internalize this principle of divine timing. Spiritual growth is progressive. Sanctification unfolds as one consistently studies and applies the Spirit-inspired Word. The Holy Spirit does not mystically indwell individuals; rather, He works through Scripture to instruct and correct. Second Timothy 3:16–17 affirms that all Scripture is inspired and equips the believer for every good work. As believers align their lives with biblical truth, they participate in Jehovah’s unfolding purpose.
Isaiah 60:22 also calls for humility. If the smallest becomes a mighty nation, the glory belongs solely to Jehovah. Human boasting is excluded. Psalm 115:1 declares, “Not to us, O Jehovah, not to us, but to your name give glory.” Spiritual advancement, congregational growth, and successful evangelism are all the result of His power operating through obedient servants.

The promise that Jehovah will hasten it “in its time” encourages steadfast endurance. Habakkuk 2:3 states, “Though it delays, wait for it; for it will certainly come.” Waiting is not inactivity but faith-driven perseverance. Believers proclaim truth, live righteously, and trust Jehovah for results. When His appointed moment arrives, fulfillment will occur swiftly and decisively. Divine sovereignty ensures that no purpose of Jehovah can be thwarted (Job 42:2).
Isaiah 60:22 therefore shapes a mindset of confident patience. The smallest act of faithful obedience matters. The most modest congregation can grow under Jehovah’s blessing. The humblest believer, grounded in Scripture and committed to evangelism, participates in a divine plan that will culminate in global restoration under Christ’s reign. Jehovah will accomplish it, not according to human urgency, but according to His perfect, righteous, and unstoppable timing.
