Science, when properly defined, is the disciplined study of the observable universe through systematic observation, experimentation, and rational analysis. It seeks to understand the regularities of nature—those fixed laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time. Scripture affirms that such order is not accidental but the direct result of divine intention. Psalm 19:1 declares, “The heavens are declaring the glory of God; and the expanse is proclaiming the work of his hands.” The psalmist presents the created order as a continuous testimony. The universe is not chaotic but structured, intelligible, and governed by consistent laws. This rational order forms the very basis upon which scientific inquiry is possible.
If the universe were the product of random, unguided forces without purpose or design, there would be no guarantee of uniformity in nature. Scientific investigation presupposes that the laws of physics will operate tomorrow as they did yesterday. Hebrews 1:3 explains that Christ is “sustaining all things by the word of his power.” The stability of natural law is not self-originating; it is upheld by the continuous sustaining power of God. The reliability of gravity, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and the laws of motion testifies to the orderly governance of Jehovah.
Proverbs 3:19 states, “Jehovah by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens.” Wisdom and understanding are not impersonal abstractions; they are attributes of the Creator. The existence of complex order presupposes intelligence. Design requires a designer. The rational structure embedded in the cosmos points unmistakably to a rational Lawgiver. Science, therefore, does not stand in opposition to biblical faith. Properly understood, science is the study of the orderly system that Jehovah brought into existence.

Genesis 1:1 declares, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This foundational statement establishes several critical truths. First, the universe had a beginning. It is not eternal. Second, it was brought into existence by an intelligent Cause. Third, creation was deliberate and structured. The six creative “days” represent extended periods during which Jehovah progressively formed and filled the earth in preparation for human habitation. These were not 24-hour days, but epochs marked by divine creative activity.
The affirmation that the universe had a beginning aligns with observable reality. The second law of thermodynamics indicates that usable energy is running down. A universe that is winding down cannot be eternal in the past. Scripture’s assertion of a beginning is consistent with this scientific principle. Isaiah 45:18 declares that God “did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited.” The earth’s fine-tuned properties—its precise distance from the sun, its atmospheric composition, the presence of liquid water, its magnetic field—demonstrate purposeful calibration.
The Bible does not present myth or allegory in Genesis. It presents historical narrative. The genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11 connect Adam to Abraham, grounding early creation history in chronological continuity. Jesus Himself affirmed the historicity of the creation account when He stated, “From the beginning of creation, God made them male and female” (Mark 10:6). Christ treated Genesis as factual history, not symbolic literature. The apostle Paul grounded the doctrine of sin and redemption in the historical reality of Adam (Romans 5:12–19). If Adam were not a real, historical individual, the theological framework of redemption would collapse.
Scientific inquiry, therefore, must be conducted within the framework of reality as revealed by Jehovah. When science investigates the mechanisms within creation, it is examining secondary processes. It does not negate the primary cause, which is the deliberate creative act of God.

Intelligent Design and the Complexity of Life
Living organisms display levels of complexity that far exceed anything produced by blind natural processes. The cell is not a simple blob of protoplasm; it is an information-processing system containing encoded instructions in DNA. Psalm 139:14 declares, “I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” The psalmist recognized the intricate craftsmanship of the human body long before the discovery of cellular biology.
DNA contains specified, functional information. Information, by its very nature, arises from intelligence. Random chemical reactions do not generate coded language. The genetic code operates with remarkable precision, directing the construction and maintenance of life. Each cell functions as a coordinated system with molecular machines, energy production mechanisms, and error-correction processes. Such organization cannot reasonably be attributed to unguided processes.
Romans 1:20 states, “For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes, both his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made.” The complexity and interdependence observed in biological systems make the reality of design evident. The rejection of this evidence does not arise from scientific deficiency but from spiritual resistance. Verse 21 explains that although people knew God, they did not glorify Him as God. The issue is not lack of evidence but unwillingness to acknowledge the Designer.
The human eye, the immune system, and the coordinated function of the brain and nervous system demonstrate integrated complexity. These systems depend on multiple components functioning simultaneously. Gradual, unguided processes cannot account for systems that require numerous interdependent parts to operate effectively. The design inference is not an appeal to ignorance but a conclusion based on the presence of specified complexity.

The Fine-Tuning of the Universe
The universe operates within extremely narrow physical parameters. Slight variations in gravitational strength, electromagnetic force, or nuclear constants would render life impossible. Isaiah 40:26 declares, “Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the one who brings out their host by number; he calls them all by name.” The vastness and precision of the cosmos reflect deliberate arrangement.
The fine-tuning of physical constants demonstrates that the universe is not the product of accidental forces. The probability of life-permitting conditions arising by chance is astronomically small. Scripture consistently attributes cosmic order to Jehovah’s purposeful activity. Jeremiah 33:25 speaks of “the fixed order of heaven and earth.” The word “fixed” underscores stability and intentional regulation.
The laws of physics are expressed in mathematical form. Mathematics is an abstract language rooted in logic and reason. The universe is not only orderly but describable through rational principles. This correspondence between human rationality and the structure of the universe is best explained by a common source: both originate from the rational mind of God. Genesis 1:27 states that man was created in the image of God. Human intellectual capacity reflects, in limited form, the rationality of the Creator.

Science, Materialism, and Worldview
Science itself is a method. Materialism is a philosophical assumption. When naturalistic explanations are treated as the only permissible explanations, science is no longer operating neutrally. It becomes governed by a worldview that excludes divine agency a priori. Colossians 2:8 warns, “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception according to the tradition of men.”
The exclusion of God from scientific explanation is not a scientific conclusion; it is a philosophical commitment. True science follows evidence wherever it leads. When evidence points to intelligence, it should not be dismissed because of ideological commitments. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge.” Reverence for the Creator establishes the proper foundation for understanding reality.
Jehovah’s existence provides the necessary preconditions for science: a rational universe, consistent laws, and human cognitive ability. Without these, scientific investigation would lack coherence. The biblical worldview supplies the intellectual framework that makes science meaningful.

The Resurrection and the Limits of Natural Explanation
The ultimate confirmation of divine power over creation is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Executed on Nisan 14, 33 C.E., He was raised on the third day. John 11:25 records Jesus’ words: “I am the resurrection and the life.” Death is the cessation of personhood; it is not transition to another conscious realm. Resurrection is a re-creation by divine power. The resurrection of Christ guarantees future resurrection for those who belong to Him.
Science cannot adjudicate supernatural acts because it is limited to observing repeatable natural processes. The resurrection stands as a historical event grounded in testimony and divine action. It affirms that the Creator is personal and actively involved in His creation.

Humanity, Morality, and Purpose
Human beings possess moral awareness and a sense of purpose. Ecclesiastes 3:11 states that God “has put eternity into their heart.” This does not mean humans possess an immortal soul. Man is a soul (Genesis 2:7), and death is the return to dust. Yet humans have an innate longing for meaning and permanence. This longing corresponds to Jehovah’s promise of eternal life through resurrection.
Moral law reflects the character of God. Romans 2:15 explains that the work of the law is written in human hearts. Objective morality cannot arise from impersonal matter. It reflects the righteous nature of the Creator. Science can describe behavior, but it cannot establish moral obligation. Morality presupposes a moral Lawgiver.
Design in biology, fine-tuning in cosmology, rationality in mathematics, and morality in human conscience converge to affirm that the universe is the product of intelligent, purposeful creation. The denial of design requires the suppression of evident truth. Scripture identifies this suppression as a spiritual problem rather than an intellectual one.

Revelation 20:6 speaks of those who will reign with Christ for a thousand years. During that period, the earth will be restored to harmony under His rule. Scientific understanding of ecological systems underscores humanity’s dependence upon balanced environmental conditions. Scripture affirms that ultimate restoration will come through divine intervention, not human effort alone.
Jehovah’s creative acts, His sustaining power, His moral standards, and His redemptive purpose demonstrate that science and design are inseparable. The created order proclaims His wisdom. The intricate structure of life reveals His craftsmanship. The fine-tuned cosmos displays His power. The resurrection of Christ confirms His authority over life and death. True science, conducted with intellectual honesty and reverence for God, leads not to denial but to worship.
