Matthew 23:10 — “Neither be called leaders, for one is your Leader, the Christ.”

Throughout human history, Jehovah has provided trustworthy leadership for His people. Yet, from the days of ancient Israel to the establishment of the Christian congregation, it has always been made clear that no human—no matter how faithful—is the ultimate leader of God’s people. Leadership rightly belongs to Christ Jesus, the appointed Head of the congregation (Ephesians 5:23). Understanding how Jehovah worked through leaders like Joshua, how Christ guided the first-century congregation, and how He continues to lead His followers today gives every believer firm reason to place full trust in His active direction.

Trustworthy Leadership in Joshua’s Day

After Moses’ death, Jehovah appointed Joshua, the son of Nun, to lead Israel into the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 31:7–8). Joshua’s leadership was not self-derived; it was the result of divine commissioning. Jehovah told him, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them” (Joshua 1:6). Joshua’s success did not come from personal charisma or military skill, but from obedience to God’s Word. Jehovah commanded him: “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it” (Joshua 1:8).

In this, Joshua served as a pattern for faithful leadership—one that relied entirely on Jehovah’s instruction rather than human reasoning. His victories at Jericho and Ai demonstrated that divine leadership brought triumph when the people obeyed, and defeat when they strayed (Joshua 6:20; 7:1–12). Joshua’s humility was key: he did not usurp God’s authority but continually sought Jehovah’s guidance through the priesthood and the law.

Moreover, the people were instructed to obey Joshua’s direction because he represented Jehovah’s leadership (Joshua 1:16–18). Their trust in him was, therefore, an expression of their trust in God Himself. When Joshua declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah” (Joshua 24:15), he was reaffirming that leadership among God’s people must always center on faithfulness to Jehovah’s sovereignty.

This historical account prefigures the greater leadership exercised by Christ Jesus, who perfectly embodied obedience, faith, and humility before the Father.

Christ’s Leadership in the First-Century Congregation

When Jesus Christ established the Christian congregation in the first century, He did not replicate the hierarchical systems of men. Instead, He formed a body of believers united under one Head—Himself. He made this clear when He said, “You are not to be called Rabbi, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers… Neither be called leaders, for one is your Leader, the Christ” (Matthew 23:8, 10).

Christ’s leadership was characterized by service, humility, and divine authority. He declared, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). He led not by coercion, but by example. The apostles learned from this model. Peter exhorted overseers to shepherd the flock “not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2–3).

The first-century congregation was guided by Christ through the Holy Spirit’s inspired direction. Though He was no longer physically on earth, He remained the active Head of the congregation. Ephesians 1:22–23 explains: “And He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body.” Christ directed matters of doctrine and organization through His apostles, particularly in resolving disputes such as those regarding circumcision (Acts 15:1–29). The process revealed Christ’s leadership: the decision was reached through Scriptural reasoning, prayer, and the confirmation of the Spirit—not through human politics or domination.

The early believers recognized that true unity and guidance came only through obedience to Christ’s teachings and commandments. When persecution arose, Christ’s leadership fortified the congregation. He had foretold such opposition, but also assured them of His sustaining presence: “Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). His leadership ensured that the congregation remained spiritually strong, doctrinally pure, and evangelistically active.

Reasons to Trust in Christ’s Leadership Today

Just as Joshua led Israel to inherit a promised land, Christ leads His followers toward everlasting life in a renewed earth under His Kingdom rule. Unlike imperfect human rulers, Christ’s leadership is unerring, just, and motivated entirely by love. He was granted “all authority in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18), which means His direction encompasses every aspect of His people’s lives and ministry.

First, Christ’s leadership is trustworthy because it is divinely appointed. Jehovah Himself declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him” (Matthew 17:5). The Father’s public affirmation confirmed that Christ is the only one qualified to lead His people. His leadership flows from His perfect obedience, sinless life, and sacrificial death.

Second, Christ’s leadership continues to be active. He is not a distant figurehead but an engaged, living Leader. Revelation 1:12–20 portrays Him walking among the lampstands, symbolizing His ongoing oversight of the congregations. He examines, disciplines, and commends His followers according to their faithfulness (Revelation 2:1–3:22). This shows that Christ is deeply involved in the spiritual condition of each congregation and believer.

Third, Christ leads through His inspired Word, the Scriptures. Since the Holy Spirit inspired the writing of the Bible under His direction (John 16:13; 2 Peter 1:21), obedience to Scripture is obedience to Christ’s leadership. The Word provides correction, training, and guidance for every aspect of Christian life (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Unlike traditions or human philosophies, the Scriptures remain unchanging and fully sufficient for spiritual direction.

Fourth, Christ’s leadership brings unity and peace. In a world divided by ideology, culture, and self-interest, only Christ’s rule can produce true harmony among believers. Ephesians 4:15–16 describes how the whole body of Christ grows and builds itself up in love when each member is joined and held together under the Head. No human organization can replicate this divine structure, because its foundation rests entirely on the living Christ.

Fifth, Christ’s leadership is victorious and enduring. He has conquered Satan, sin, and death, guaranteeing the eventual restoration of all creation under His Kingdom (1 Corinthians 15:24–28). His leadership will never falter, for “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). His promises are certain, His authority is absolute, and His care is personal.

Living in Full Trust of Christ’s Leadership

To trust in Christ’s leadership means to submit fully to His authority and direction as revealed in Scripture. It means rejecting the human tendency to elevate men or institutions above the Word of God. Christ’s followers must imitate His humility and obedience, focusing on fulfilling the commission He gave—to make disciples, teach truth, and live holy lives.

This trust is not blind faith but confidence grounded in proven reliability. Every act, every word, and every decision of Christ demonstrates perfect wisdom and justice. His leadership provides comfort amid uncertainty, strength amid opposition, and purpose amid a morally decaying world. Those who align their lives with His direction experience genuine peace and hope, knowing that their Leader is not of this world but reigns from heaven, soon to establish righteous rule over all the earth.

Therefore, every believer should echo the spirit of Joshua’s declaration: “As for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.” Yet now, this service is rendered through the Head appointed by Jehovah—Jesus Christ. He alone is worthy of complete allegiance, devotion, and trust. He is the Captain of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10), the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls (1 Peter 2:25), and the One through whom Jehovah will bring all things to their rightful order. To follow Him is to walk securely, for His leadership is perfect, active, and everlasting.
