How Should Believers Live in Light of the Coming Judgment?
2 Peter 3:11 states, “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives.” This verse challenges believers to consider their conduct in light of the certainty of Jehovah’s coming judgment. It teaches that because this world is temporary, followers of Christ must prioritize righteousness, live in obedience to Jehovah, and maintain a perspective focused on eternal things rather than fleeting earthly concerns.
The phrase “Since everything will be destroyed in this way” refers to the context of the previous verses, where Peter describes the coming judgment upon the earth. In 2 Peter 3:10, he warns, “But the day of Jehovah will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.” This emphasizes that the current world system is temporary and destined for divine judgment. Unlike human kingdoms, which rise and fall over time, Jehovah’s ultimate plan will bring about the complete renewal of creation (Revelation 21:1).
Peter then asks, “What kind of people ought you to be?” This rhetorical question forces believers to evaluate their lives. Since the world is passing away, priorities must align with eternal truths rather than temporary desires. 1 John 2:17 reinforces this: “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” Knowing that Jehovah’s judgment is certain should motivate believers to live according to His standards rather than following the ways of the world.
Peter answers his own question by stating, “You ought to live holy and godly lives.” The word “holy” (hagios) means set apart for Jehovah’s purposes, emphasizing moral purity and separation from sinful influences. This aligns with 1 Peter 1:15-16, which commands, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” Holiness is not an optional characteristic for believers—it is a requirement.
The word “godly” (eusebēs) refers to a life devoted to Jehovah, characterized by reverence and obedience. True godliness is not just about outward actions but about a heart fully committed to Jehovah’s will. Paul describes this in Titus 2:12: “It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age.” Godliness is about making choices that reflect Jehovah’s righteousness, even in a world that opposes His truth.
Living with this perspective requires daily commitment. Jesus taught in Matthew 6:19-20, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” Believers must invest in what is eternal, knowing that this world will not last. Instead of being consumed with material success, temporary pleasures, or personal ambitions, they should focus on their spiritual growth and faithfulness to Jehovah.
Ultimately, 2 Peter 3:11 reminds believers that they must live with eternity in mind. Since the present world will pass away, they should strive for holiness, righteousness, and godliness, ensuring that their lives reflect Jehovah’s will. This verse serves as both a warning and an encouragement—calling believers to maintain purity and devotion, knowing that Jehovah’s kingdom is the only thing that will endure forever.
