Faith: The Foundation of Belief in the Unseen
Faith, according to Scripture, is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is not merely a belief without evidence but rather a profound trust in Jehovah and His promises, even if we cannot perceive the outcome with our physical senses. For Christians, faith goes beyond the material world and ventures into the spiritual, trusting that what Jehovah has revealed in His Word is true and reliable, even if unseen.
Throughout the Bible, examples of faith remind us that many of God’s works are not visible to the naked eye yet are entirely certain. Abraham, for instance, demonstrated tremendous faith by trusting that Jehovah would fulfill His promise of numerous descendants, despite Sarah’s barrenness and their advanced age (Genesis 15:5-6; Romans 4:18-21). Faith allowed Abraham to see with spiritual eyes what was invisible at that time in the physical realm. Similarly, Moses “endured as seeing him who is invisible,” trusting in God even though he could not physically see Jehovah (Hebrews 11:27).
Why Does God Require Faith in the Invisible?
Jehovah, the Creator of all things, transcends the physical limitations of human sight. He does not demand faith to obscure the truth but to draw believers into a deeper relationship with Him. As Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Faith in the unseen draws believers to rely on Jehovah’s wisdom and sovereignty, acknowledging His ways are beyond our comprehension and senses.
The act of trusting in what cannot be seen strengthens believers’ reliance on Jehovah’s promises, fostering a relationship rooted not in immediate gratification or material assurance but in a steadfast hope. The apostle Paul wrote that “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7), underscoring that Christian faith involves trusting in Jehovah’s word and character. Jehovah seeks those who are willing to trust Him completely, even when physical evidence is lacking, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill His promises.
Examples of Faith in the Unseen Throughout Scripture
Noah: Trusting in Jehovah’s Warning
Noah’s faith serves as a profound example of trusting in what was not yet visible. Jehovah warned Noah of an impending flood that would destroy the world, something that had not occurred in human history at that time (Genesis 6:13). Despite the ridicule of others and the complete absence of any visible sign of rain or flood, Noah acted on Jehovah’s word by building the ark. His obedience demonstrated unwavering faith in Jehovah’s unseen judgment and provision (Hebrews 11:7). Noah’s faith saved his family and preserved humanity, showing that Jehovah rewards those who heed His word, even when it seems improbable.
The Israelites at the Red Sea: Faith in Jehovah’s Deliverance
When the Israelites were trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea, their deliverance seemed impossible. Yet, by Jehovah’s command, Moses stretched out his hand, and the waters parted, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground (Exodus 14:21-22). The people had no assurance of physical safety until they stepped forward in faith, trusting in Jehovah’s power to deliver them. Their faith in the unseen power of Jehovah led to their salvation from the Egyptians, reinforcing that Jehovah acts powerfully when His people trust Him, even against overwhelming odds.
Faith in the Promises of the Messiah
One of the most powerful examples of faith in the unseen is found in the anticipation of the Messiah. Prophets in the Old Testament foretold the coming of a Savior, but generations of faithful believers would pass away without witnessing the fulfillment of these prophecies. Isaiah prophesied of a suffering servant who would “bear the sins of many” (Isaiah 53:12), and Daniel spoke of “an anointed one” who would be cut off (Daniel 9:26). Even without witnessing these events, faithful individuals like Simeon and Anna waited expectantly for the Messiah, demonstrating their faith in Jehovah’s promises (Luke 2:25-38). Their unwavering belief was ultimately rewarded when they encountered the newborn Jesus, the visible manifestation of Jehovah’s unseen promise.
Faith in the Resurrection: The Hope of Things Unseen
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a cornerstone of Christian faith and serves as a promise of future resurrection for believers. Jesus, after His crucifixion, rose from the dead, a reality witnessed by His disciples and over five hundred others (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). This act, although physically seen by some, remains a matter of faith for those who came afterward. Jesus stated, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).
Belief in the resurrection is not only a testament to Jehovah’s power but a promise of eternal life for all who have faith in Him. Paul describes this hope as foundational to the Christian faith: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile” (1 Corinthians 15:17). The resurrection provides assurance of life beyond what is visible, motivating Christians to live righteously and endure hardships with the assurance that they, too, will experience resurrection through Jehovah’s power.
Faith and Prayer: Believing in Jehovah’s Unseen Intervention
Faith in the unseen is also evident in prayer. Jesus taught His followers to “ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). Prayer is an act of faith, believing that Jehovah hears and will respond according to His wisdom and timing. Christians are called to pray with confidence, trusting that “the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (James 5:16). Even if the results of prayer are not immediately visible, believers hold onto the assurance that Jehovah hears their petitions and answers in the way that aligns with His perfect will.
Living Out Faith in the Modern World
In a world increasingly skeptical of anything beyond physical evidence, living by faith requires courage. Many adopt the stance, “I believe only in what I can see,” but Scripture reveals that a life based solely on physical perception is limited. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
For Christians, faith is not a blind leap but a grounded trust in Jehovah’s character and promises. Living by faith involves a daily commitment to view life through a spiritual lens, seeking guidance from Jehovah’s Word rather than the changing philosophies of the world. Romans 12:2 urges believers to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” In this way, Christians can cultivate a mindset that values spiritual truths over temporary, visible realities.
Encouraging Faith in the Unseen in Our Families and Communities
Faith in what cannot be seen should be nurtured within Christian families and communities. Parents are called to teach their children about Jehovah’s faithfulness, sharing stories from Scripture that illustrate Jehovah’s invisible but real interventions. Proverbs 22:6 encourages parents to “train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” By imparting faith through both word and example, parents can instill a trust in Jehovah’s unseen hand that will guide their children throughout life.
In Christian communities, mutual encouragement strengthens faith. Hebrews 10:24-25 exhorts believers to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together.” Gathering with fellow believers provides the opportunity to share testimonies of Jehovah’s unseen work in their lives, reinforcing the truth that He is ever-present and faithful.
Faith in Future Promises: The New Heavens and New Earth
The ultimate fulfillment of unseen promises lies in the future hope of the new heavens and the new earth, as described in Revelation 21:1-4. While Christians have not yet seen this reality, they trust in Jehovah’s promise of a world where “death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.” This hope inspires believers to endure present trials with the assurance of an eternal, joyful future in Jehovah’s presence.
Faith in this promise enables Christians to endure suffering with hope, knowing that Jehovah’s plan for redemption will be fulfilled. This vision of a future beyond the limitations of the visible world encourages believers to keep their eyes fixed on Jehovah and His promises, for “what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Conclusion: Walking by Faith and Not by Sight
Faith in the unseen is central to the Christian walk. It is through faith that believers trust in Jehovah’s promises, hold fast to His Word, and anticipate His future works with hope. By anchoring their lives in the truth of Scripture and the power of Jehovah, Christians find strength to face a world that often dismisses the invisible. Faith in what cannot be seen is not weakness; it is a profound confidence in Jehovah’s unfailing character and His eternal promises.
