God’s interest in human well-being is evident throughout the Scriptures, and He offers practical guidance on how to live in a way that promotes physical, mental, and emotional health. By applying biblical counsel, you can improve your health, avoid harmful habits, and develop a balanced approach to diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. This chapter will explore how the Bible offers wisdom that can lead to better health and longer life.
What Reasons Do You Have to Know That God Is Interested in Your Health?
From the beginning, God demonstrated His concern for human health and well-being. When He created Adam and Eve, He placed them in the Garden of Eden, a paradise that provided everything they needed for a healthy and fulfilling life (Genesis 2:8-9). God’s desire for humanity to enjoy good health is further emphasized in the laws He gave to the Israelites. These laws included guidelines for sanitation, hygiene, and diet, which were intended to protect the people from disease and promote long life.
For example, the Israelites were instructed to avoid unclean animals (Leviticus 11) and to practice cleanliness in their daily lives (Deuteronomy 23:12-14). While these laws were part of the Mosaic Covenant, they reveal God’s care for the physical health of His people. In the same way, today, God’s principles provide a foundation for living a healthy life.
The apostle John expressed God’s desire for our well-being when he wrote: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 1:2). This verse highlights the connection between spiritual and physical health, showing that God’s concern for our well-being extends to all aspects of life.
What Bible Counsel Bears on the Use of Tobacco?
While the Bible does not specifically mention tobacco, the principles found in Scripture clearly discourage the use of substances that harm the body. The apostle Paul emphasized that our bodies are “a temple of the Holy Spirit,” and we are called to honor God with our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The use of tobacco, which is known to cause significant harm to the body, is inconsistent with the biblical principle of treating the body with respect and care.
Tobacco use leads to a variety of health problems, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues. These harmful effects violate the biblical command to “do no harm” to oneself or others. In Proverbs 23:20-21, we are warned against practices that lead to self-destruction: “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” Although this verse specifically addresses excessive drinking and overeating, the principle applies to any habit that harms the body, including tobacco use.
By abstaining from tobacco and other harmful substances, we honor God’s gift of life and demonstrate our commitment to living according to His principles.
How Does the Bible Help Us in Our View of Alcohol? Of Drugs?
The Bible provides balanced counsel on the use of alcohol. While it does not prohibit the moderate consumption of alcohol, it strongly condemns drunkenness and the abuse of alcohol. In Ephesians 5:18, Paul instructs, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” This verse highlights the importance of self-control and warns against the excesses that can lead to physical, emotional, and spiritual harm.
The Bible also acknowledges that alcohol can have positive effects when used in moderation. Psalm 104:14-15 speaks of wine that “gladdens human hearts,” and Paul advised Timothy to “use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses” (1 Timothy 5:23). These verses indicate that alcohol, when used responsibly, can have medicinal benefits and can be enjoyed in a way that honors God.
However, the Bible is clear that the misuse of alcohol can lead to addiction, poor health, and spiritual downfall. Proverbs 23:29-35 provides a vivid description of the negative consequences of excessive drinking, warning that it leads to sorrow, strife, and physical harm.
As for drugs, the Bible does not specifically mention modern recreational drugs, but the principles of sobriety and self-control apply. Just as with alcohol, the misuse of drugs leads to addiction, destructive behavior, and damage to one’s health. The Bible’s warnings against drunkenness (Galatians 5:19-21) and its emphasis on living a life free from harmful influences (1 Peter 5:8) guide Christians to avoid drug use.
What Reasons Do You Have for Applying God’s Counsel in Your Life?
The Bible’s counsel is not merely a set of rules to follow; it is a source of life-giving wisdom. Proverbs 3:1-2 encourages us to follow God’s commands, stating, “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.” By applying God’s counsel, we not only benefit spiritually but also physically and emotionally.
One of the key reasons to apply God’s counsel is the promise of a better quality of life. When we live according to biblical principles, we avoid many of the pitfalls that lead to poor health, stress, and relational problems. For example, by practicing moderation, exercising self-control, and maintaining healthy relationships, we promote both physical and mental well-being.
In addition, following God’s counsel brings us into alignment with His design for our lives. Psalm 119:105 reminds us that “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s Word provides direction and guidance in every area of life, including how to care for our bodies and make wise choices about our health.
Why Do You Really Need to Exercise?
The Bible emphasizes the importance of taking care of our bodies, which includes maintaining physical fitness. While the Bible does not explicitly command exercise, it encourages a balanced approach to caring for the body. Paul acknowledged the value of physical training when he wrote, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8).
Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good health. It strengthens the heart, improves circulation, and helps regulate weight. Exercise also reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. Additionally, exercise promotes mental and emotional well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
While spiritual health is of primary importance, physical health should not be neglected. The Bible’s emphasis on self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) and discipline (1 Corinthians 9:27) encourages us to be diligent in caring for our physical bodies. By making exercise a regular part of our routine, we honor God by taking care of the bodies He has entrusted to us.
Better Health: Eat Wisely
The Bible contains practical guidance on diet that can lead to better health. While specific dietary laws given to Israel under the Mosaic Law are no longer binding on Christians (Colossians 2:16-17), the principles behind those laws remain beneficial. For example, the prohibition against eating animals that were considered unclean (Leviticus 11) was intended to protect the Israelites from diseases that could be transmitted through improper handling or consumption of certain animals.
Today, the Bible’s emphasis on moderation and self-control applies to our eating habits. Proverbs 25:16 warns, “If you find honey, eat just enough—too much of it, and you will vomit.” This principle of moderation can be applied to all aspects of diet. Overeating, especially foods that are high in sugar, fat, and unhealthy ingredients, leads to health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.
A balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is essential for maintaining good health. The Bible’s emphasis on wisdom and self-control (Proverbs 23:20-21) encourages us to make thoughtful choices about what we eat and to avoid excess.
The Bible Contains Practical Guidance That Promotes Physical, Mental, and Emotional Health
The Bible is not only a spiritual guide but also a source of practical wisdom that promotes overall well-being. In addition to its teachings on diet, exercise, and moderation, the Bible offers counsel on how to manage stress, maintain healthy relationships, and cultivate a positive outlook on life.
One key aspect of mental and emotional health is learning to trust in God and cast our anxieties on Him. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Trusting in God’s care for us can alleviate the mental and emotional burden of stress and worry.
The Bible also teaches the importance of forgiveness, which has been shown to have significant benefits for mental health. Holding on to anger and resentment can lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical health problems. Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger…Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” By practicing forgiveness, we release ourselves from the emotional toll of holding onto grudges and experience greater peace.
Moreover, the Bible encourages us to cultivate positive relationships with others. Proverbs 17:17 states, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Strong, supportive relationships contribute to emotional well-being and help us navigate life’s challenges.
