(1) Why Does God Allow Suffering?

Understanding the Nature of Suffering

Suffering is a universal experience that raises profound questions about the nature of God and the world He created. The Bible provides a comprehensive explanation of suffering, its origins, and its purpose. To begin with, suffering is defined as the experience of enduring pain, distress, or hardship. This suffering can manifest physically, emotionally, or mentally, and it can be caused by a multitude of factors, including natural disasters, human actions, illnesses, and even spiritual forces.

The Bible acknowledges that suffering is a real and present part of human existence. In Ecclesiastes 9:11, it is stated that “time and chance happen to them all,” indicating that suffering can be a result of circumstances beyond an individual’s control. This highlights the fact that suffering is not always directly caused by God or by the individual’s actions but can be the result of living in a world that has been marred by sin.

The Origin of Suffering: The Fall of Man

To understand why suffering exists, we must go back to the beginning of human history as recorded in Genesis. Jehovah God created Adam and Eve, the first humans, perfect and placed them in a paradise-like environment in the Garden of Eden. They were given the freedom to enjoy everything in the garden except for the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Jehovah warned them that disobedience would result in death (Genesis 2:16-17).

However, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, influenced by Satan, who appeared in the form of a serpent. This act of disobedience, known as the Fall, introduced sin into the world. Romans 5:12 explains, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” This original sin not only brought physical death but also introduced suffering into the world.

The suffering we experience today is a direct consequence of that original sin. Adam and Eve’s decision to go their own way, apart from God’s guidance, resulted in a world where sin, death, and suffering are ever-present realities. As a result, all of humanity inherited a sinful nature, leading to various forms of suffering, including illness, natural disasters, and the moral evil that humans inflict on one another.

Human Responsibility and the Role of Satan

While the Fall is the primary cause of suffering, the Bible also teaches that humans and spiritual forces contribute to the continuation of suffering. Galatians 6:7 states, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” This verse emphasizes that many of the sufferings we experience are the result of our own actions or the actions of others. For example, wars, environmental degradation, and personal vices like substance abuse all contribute to the suffering in the world.

Moreover, the Bible reveals that Satan and his demons play a significant role in promoting suffering. Revelation 12:12 warns, “Woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” Satan, described as the “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), actively works to deceive and destroy, causing immense suffering and pain. Acts 10:38 further notes that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” This underscores the reality that much of the suffering attributed to God is actually the result of Satan’s influence.

The Purpose of Suffering and God’s Justice

A common question is why God, who is all-powerful and loving, allows suffering to continue. The Bible provides several answers to this question, all of which point to God’s justice and His ultimate plan for humanity.

First, suffering serves as a consequence of sin, demonstrating God’s justice. Deuteronomy 32:4 declares, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” If God were to ignore sin and its consequences, He would not be just. By allowing suffering as a result of sin, God upholds His moral order.

Second, suffering can serve a redemptive purpose. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul writes, “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope” (Romans 5:3-4). Suffering, when approached with faith, can lead to spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God. It can also draw people closer to God, as they seek His comfort and guidance in times of distress.

Third, suffering provides an opportunity for God to demonstrate His mercy and love. Romans 8:28 assures us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Even in the midst of suffering, God is working to bring about His good purposes for those who trust in Him. The ultimate demonstration of this is seen in the life of Jesus Christ, who suffered and died on the cross to bring about the salvation of humanity (1 Peter 3:18).

Finally, God has promised to bring an end to all suffering. Revelation 21:4 offers the hope that in the new creation, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” This promise assures us that suffering is not eternal and that God will ultimately restore all things to their original perfection.

(2) Why Is Religion Full of Hypocrisy?

The Reality of Hypocrisy in Religion

Hypocrisy in religion is another issue that causes many to question the validity of religious faith. Hypocrisy is defined as the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform. It is a form of deception that can be especially damaging in a religious context, where people expect integrity and sincerity.

The Bible acknowledges the existence of hypocrisy in religion and condemns it in the strongest terms. Jesus Christ Himself confronted the religious leaders of His day, saying, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness” (Matthew 23:27). This harsh rebuke highlights the seriousness of hypocrisy, especially among those who claim to represent God.

The Causes of Religious Hypocrisy

There are several reasons why hypocrisy is so prevalent in religion. First, it stems from the sinful nature of humanity. Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Even those who are genuinely committed to their faith can fall into hypocrisy because of their inherent sinful tendencies. This is why the Bible repeatedly calls for self-examination and repentance. 1 John 1:8-9 warns, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Second, hypocrisy often arises from a desire for social status or approval. In Jesus’ time, the Pharisees were known for their outward displays of piety, which they used to gain the admiration of others. Jesus exposed this when He said, “They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues” (Matthew 23:5-6). This desire for recognition can lead people to put on a façade of righteousness while harboring sin in their hearts.

Third, hypocrisy can be a result of false teaching. The Apostle Paul warned the early Christians about the dangers of false teachers who would lead people astray. In 2 Timothy 4:3-4, he writes, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” When religious leaders promote teachings that are not grounded in Scripture, it can lead to a culture of hypocrisy where outward conformity is valued over genuine faith.

God’s Hatred of Hypocrisy

The Bible makes it clear that God hates hypocrisy. In Jeremiah 7:9-11, God rebukes the Israelites for their hypocrisy, saying, “Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations?” This passage illustrates that God is not interested in empty rituals or outward displays of piety. What He desires is a heart that is truly devoted to Him.

Jesus emphasized this in His teachings, instructing His followers to practice their faith with sincerity and humility. In Matthew 6:1, He said, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” This warning underscores the importance of authenticity in our relationship with God.

True Religion Is Free from Hypocrisy

While hypocrisy exists in religion, it is not a reflection of true religion. The Bible defines true religion as one that is rooted in love for God and love for others. Jesus taught, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). This love must be genuine and “without hypocrisy” (Romans 12:9).

True religion is also characterized by obedience to God’s Word. James 1:22 instructs believers, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” This means that true faith is not just about what we say we believe, but about how we live our lives in accordance with God’s commands.

The existence of hypocrisy in religion is not an indictment of God or of true faith but is a reflection of human sinfulness. The Bible warns that in the last days, false teachers and hypocrites will abound, leading many astray (2 Timothy 3:1-5). However, God promises that He will judge hypocrites and false teachers, and He calls His people to live lives of integrity and sincerity.

(3) What Is the Purpose of Life?

The Search for Meaning

One of the most fundamental questions that humans have grappled with throughout history is the purpose of life. Why are we here? What is the meaning of our existence? These questions are not just philosophical; they are deeply personal, touching on the very core of who we are and why we live.

The Bible provides clear answers to these questions, revealing that our existence is not an accident but is part of God’s intentional and purposeful plan. The purpose of life is closely tied to God’s character, His creation, and His ultimate plan for humanity.

Created in the Image of God

The Bible begins with the account of creation in Genesis, where it is stated that “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). This verse reveals a profound truth: humans were created in the image of God. This means that we are unique among all of God’s creations, endowed with the ability to reflect God’s character, to think, to create, and to relate to others.

Being made in God’s image also means that we have a special purpose. Genesis 1:28 records God’s command to Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” This command reveals that humans were created to rule over the earth as stewards of God’s creation. Our purpose includes caring for the world that God has made, using its resources wisely, and ensuring that it remains a place where life can flourish.

To Glorify God and Enjoy Him Forever

The ultimate purpose of life, according to the Bible, is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. This purpose is reflected in the words of the Apostle Paul, who wrote, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Glorifying God means living in a way that honors Him, reflects His character, and proclaims His greatness.

This purpose is not just about following rules or fulfilling obligations; it is about having a relationship with God. The Westminster Shorter Catechism, a historic Christian document, famously summarizes the purpose of life by stating, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” This enjoyment of God is not limited to the afterlife but begins in this life as we experience His presence, His love, and His blessings.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

The Eternal Perspective

The Bible also teaches that our life on earth is only a part of our existence. While our earthly life is relatively brief, it is a preparation for eternity. Ecclesiastes 3:11 states, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” This verse indicates that humans have an innate sense of eternity, a recognition that there is more to life than just the years we spend on earth.

The purpose of life, therefore, is not just about what we accomplish in this world, but about preparing for the life to come. Jesus taught, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). Our ultimate purpose is to live in such a way that we are storing up treasures in heaven, living with an eternal perspective that shapes our decisions and priorities.

God’s Purpose for Humanity

God’s purpose for humanity is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:16-17 declares, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Jesus is the center of God’s plan for the universe, and our purpose is found in Him.

Through Jesus, we are reconciled to God and restored to our original purpose. Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Our purpose is to live out the good works that God has prepared for us, to be His representatives on earth, and to bring others into a saving relationship with Him.

The Bible also reveals that God’s ultimate plan is to create a new heaven and a new earth, where He will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:1-4). This new creation will be free from sin, suffering, and death, and will be a place of perfect joy and fulfillment. Our purpose in this life is to prepare for that future reality by living in a way that reflects God’s kingdom values and by sharing the hope of the gospel with others.

The Meaning of Life in a Fallen World

In a world that has been marred by sin, the purpose of life can sometimes seem elusive. Many people search for meaning in wealth, success, relationships, or pleasure, only to find that these things do not satisfy the deepest longings of their hearts. The Bible teaches that true meaning and purpose can only be found in a relationship with God, who created us for Himself.

Jesus addressed the issue of life’s purpose when He said, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26). This statement challenges us to consider what is truly valuable in life. The things of this world are temporary, but our relationship with God is eternal. Therefore, our purpose must be rooted in what is eternal, not in the fleeting pleasures or accomplishments of this world.

Psalm 73:25-26 captures this truth beautifully: “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Our purpose is to know God, to love Him, and to find our satisfaction in Him alone.

In conclusion, the Bible provides clear and compelling answers to the questions of why suffering exists, why hypocrisy is present in religion, and what the purpose of life is. These answers are rooted in the character of God, the reality of sin, and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. As we seek to understand and live out these truths, we find that our lives have meaning, purpose, and hope in the midst of a fallen world.
