The Problem: Threats to Our Safety and Security

In today’s world, threats to our safety and security seem to multiply with each passing day. Whether it is the fear of violence, the instability of governments, economic uncertainty, or the looming dangers of natural disasters, people everywhere are searching for a sense of security. This deep-rooted desire for safety is not new; it has been a part of the human condition since the beginning. However, in modern times, the sense of insecurity appears to have escalated, leaving many wondering if they will ever truly feel safe.

The Bible, the inspired Word of God, provides insight into the reasons behind these threats and offers guidance on how to navigate a world filled with danger and uncertainty. One of the primary sources of insecurity in the world is the presence of evil and sin, which has marred the creation since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:17-19). Sin introduced suffering, pain, and death into the world, leading to the countless forms of insecurity that plague humanity.

Moreover, the Bible speaks of a spiritual adversary, Satan, who “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). This adversary has a vested interest in fostering fear, chaos, and insecurity among people, drawing them away from trusting in God’s protection and care.

THERE IS A REBEL IN THE HOUSE thirteen-reasons-to-keep-living_021

The apostle Paul warned Timothy about the “last days,” describing a time of widespread moral decay, where people would be “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:1-2). This moral breakdown contributes significantly to the sense of insecurity that permeates society. When people abandon moral principles, respect for one another diminishes, and the result is an increase in crime, violence, and general lawlessness.

Beyond the moral decay, the instability of human governments adds to the problem. The Bible teaches that human rulers, despite their best efforts, are limited in their ability to provide true and lasting security. Daniel 2:21 reminds us that God “changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings.” This passage highlights the transient nature of human governments and their inherent inability to provide eternal security. The prophet Isaiah also speaks to the fallibility of human rulers, stating, “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation” (Psalm 146:3). The reliance on imperfect human leaders often leads to disappointment and a deepening sense of insecurity.

Economic instability further exacerbates feelings of insecurity. Jesus addressed this concern in Matthew 6:19-21, where He advised His followers not to “lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” Here, Jesus underscores the temporal nature of material wealth and the dangers of placing our trust in it. The reality is that economic systems are fragile, and wealth can quickly be lost, leaving people vulnerable and insecure.

Lastly, the natural world itself can be a source of fear. Earthquakes, floods, famines, and other natural disasters remind us of our vulnerability in the face of forces beyond our control. In Matthew 24:7, Jesus foretold of such events, saying, “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” These natural occurrences contribute to the overall sense of insecurity that many people feel today.

The Challenge: Getting to the Root of Our Problems

Addressing the problem of insecurity requires more than just temporary fixes or superficial solutions. The root of the problem lies in the spiritual condition of humanity. The Bible reveals that the ultimate source of all insecurity is the separation from God caused by sin. Isaiah 59:2 states, “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.” This separation results in fear, uncertainty, and a lack of peace.

The challenge, therefore, is to address the spiritual root of insecurity. This begins with acknowledging the reality of sin and the need for reconciliation with God. Romans 3:23 declares, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Recognizing this truth is the first step toward addressing the underlying cause of insecurity.

The Bible also teaches that true security can only be found in a right relationship with God. Proverbs 18:10 affirms, “The name of Jehovah is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” This verse emphasizes that safety and security are found in God alone, not in human efforts or material possessions.

However, the challenge is not just an individual one. Society as a whole must address the moral decay that contributes to insecurity. This requires a return to the moral principles found in the Bible. Psalm 119:165 declares, “Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.” When individuals and communities embrace God’s moral law, the result is greater peace and security.

In addition to addressing the moral decay, there is a need to recognize the limitations of human governments and the temporary nature of material wealth. Psalm 62:10 warns, “Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.” Instead of placing our trust in worldly systems, we are called to trust in God’s provision and protection.

A Step Toward Meeting the Challenge: Moral Education

One of the most effective ways to address the root of insecurity is through moral education based on the teachings of the Bible. Proverbs 22:6 instructs, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse highlights the importance of instilling moral values from a young age. When individuals are taught to live according to God’s principles, they are better equipped to navigate the challenges of life and find true security.

Moral education involves more than just teaching right from wrong. It also includes teaching individuals to trust in God and to seek His guidance in all aspects of life. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” This trust in God provides a foundation of security that cannot be shaken by external circumstances.

Furthermore, moral education should emphasize the importance of community and mutual support. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.” A strong community, built on biblical principles, provides a sense of belonging and security that is essential in a world filled with uncertainty.

They Faced the Challenge: Real-Life Accounts of How the Bible Changed Lives

Throughout history, countless individuals have found relief from fear and insecurity by turning to the teachings of the Bible. Here are two real-life accounts that demonstrate the transformative power of Scripture in the lives of those living in poverty and fear.

Case Study 1: John and Mary’s Story

John and Mary were a couple living in a poverty-stricken neighborhood plagued by crime and violence. They had always struggled to make ends meet, and the constant threat of theft and violence left them feeling hopeless and fearful. Despite their difficult circumstances, they were introduced to the Bible through a local outreach program. Initially skeptical, they began to read the Scriptures and attend Bible study meetings.

As they delved deeper into the teachings of Jesus, they found a sense of peace that they had never experienced before. John was particularly moved by Matthew 6:25-34, where Jesus teaches not to worry about tomorrow because God cares for His children. The couple also found encouragement in Psalm 23, where David expresses his trust in God’s protection.

Over time, their faith grew, and they began to experience a profound sense of security, despite their external circumstances. They no longer feared for their safety because they knew that God was watching over them. With newfound confidence, John and Mary began to take steps to improve their situation, including seeking better employment opportunities and becoming more involved in their community.

Their lives were transformed, not just materially but spiritually. The fear that once dominated their lives was replaced with a sense of purpose and trust in God. John and Mary’s story is a testament to the power of the Bible to bring hope and security to those who are struggling.

Case Study 2: Susan’s Journey

Susan was a single mother living in a dangerous urban environment. She faced constant threats from gangs in her neighborhood, and the fear for her children’s safety was overwhelming. Susan had grown up in a Christian home but had drifted away from her faith during her teenage years. However, in the midst of her struggles, she found herself drawn back to the Bible.

One night, after a particularly frightening encounter with gang members, Susan opened her Bible to Psalm 91, a passage her mother had often read to her as a child. As she read, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty,” she felt a wave of peace wash over her. The words of the Psalm became a source of comfort and strength, and Susan began to pray earnestly for God’s protection over her family.

Susan’s renewed faith led her to become more active in her local church, where she found a supportive community that helped her navigate the challenges she faced. Through the church, she was able to connect with resources that assisted her in finding safer housing and securing a stable job. Her children also became involved in the church’s youth programs, which provided them with positive role models and a safe environment.

Susan’s life was transformed by the power of the Bible and the support of her church community. The fear and insecurity that once ruled her life were replaced by a deep trust in God’s provision and protection. Today, Susan and her children are thriving, and she credits her renewed faith for the positive changes in their lives.

The Coming Government That Will Meet the Challenge: “Of Peace There Shall Be No End”

While moral education and personal transformation can provide significant relief from insecurity, the Bible promises an even greater solution to the challenges we face: the coming Kingdom of God. This government, established by God Himself, will bring about a world where peace and security are guaranteed for all who submit to His rule.

Isaiah 9:6-7 speaks of this future government, declaring, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.” This prophecy points to the reign of Jesus Christ, who will establish a government characterized by peace, justice, and righteousness.

The Bible also teaches that this Kingdom will bring about the complete eradication of all threats to safety and security. Revelation 21:4 describes a time when “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” In this new world, the causes of insecurity—violence, crime, economic instability, and natural disasters—will be removed, and the inhabitants of the Kingdom will live in perfect peace.

Under the rule of Christ, the earth will be transformed into a paradise, fulfilling the promise found in Psalm 37:11: “But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” This Kingdom will be a place where the righteous can dwell in safety, free from fear and harm.

How the Challenge Will Be Fully Overcome: Under God’s Kingdom “Peace Will Abound”

The ultimate solution to the problem of insecurity lies in the establishment of God’s Kingdom. The Bible assures us that under this divine government, peace will not only be established but will abound.

In Psalm 72:7-8, we read, “In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more! May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!” This passage describes the reign of the Messiah, under whose rule peace and security will extend throughout the entire earth.

The prophet Micah also speaks of this time, saying, “He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore; but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid” (Micah 4:3-4). The imagery of weapons being turned into farming tools symbolizes the end of violence and the beginning of an era of peace and prosperity.

This future Kingdom will also see the removal of all physical and emotional suffering. Isaiah 25:8 declares, “He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord Jehovah will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for Jehovah has spoken.” This verse reinforces the promise that God will eliminate all causes of pain and insecurity, providing eternal peace for His people.

The security offered by God’s Kingdom is not merely external but also internal. Philippians 4:7 promises, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This peace is a deep, abiding sense of well-being that comes from knowing that God is in control and that His purposes will prevail.

As believers, we are called to look forward to this Kingdom with hope and anticipation. The apostle Peter encourages us in 2 Peter 3:13, “But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” This new creation will be a place where the security and peace we long for will be fully realized.

In the meantime, we are called to live as citizens of this coming Kingdom, embodying its values and spreading the message of hope to a world in desperate need of security. Jesus commissioned His followers to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), sharing the good news of the Kingdom and inviting others to experience the peace that comes from a relationship with God.

As we await the fulfillment of God’s promises, we can take comfort in the assurance that He is with us, providing protection and peace even in the midst of a turbulent world. Psalm 46:1-2 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.” Our security is ultimately found in God, and in His Kingdom, we will experience the fullness of that security for all eternity.
