Introduction: The Modern Search for Genetic Causes
The quest to understand human behavior has led scientists to explore the role of genetics in various aspects of human life, including alcoholism, homosexuality, promiscuity, violence, and even mortality. This search has raised significant questions about personal responsibility versus biological determinism. If genes are the root cause of these behaviors, it suggests a potential for genetic engineering to rectify such issues. However, this view assumes that our genetic makeup is the ultimate culprit for our actions. The implications of this perspective are profound, influencing how we view ourselves and our future. Before delving into the scientific evidence, it is essential to consider the biblical account of mankind’s origin.
The Genesis Account: Creation and the Fall
The Bible presents a clear account of humanity’s beginnings. Adam and Eve, the first humans, were created by Jehovah God, whose works are described as “very good” (Genesis 1:31; Deuteronomy 32:4). This declaration indicates that they were created without any inherent flaws. God blessed them and commanded them to be fruitful and exercise dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:28).
The creation of humans in God’s image (Genesis 1:27) signifies that they were endowed with qualities reflective of God’s nature, such as a sense of morality and conscience (Romans 2:14-15). They were also given free will, capable of making choices based on moral discernment. Jehovah provided clear guidelines and warnings about the consequences of disobedience (Genesis 2:17).
When Adam faced the decision in the Garden of Eden, he chose to follow his wife into disobedience, prioritizing immediate gratification over his relationship with his Creator and the long-term consequences (Genesis 3:6, 12; 1 Timothy 2:14). God’s response to their sin was not to correct a genetic flaw but to enforce the consequences He had warned them about, leading to their eventual death (Genesis 3:17-19). This early history highlights the fundamental nature of human behavior and responsibility.
Scientific Pursuits: Genetics and Behavior
The scientific community has long sought to uncover genetic links to human behavior and pathology. For example, after a decade of research, scientists isolated the gene associated with Huntington’s disease but could not explain its mechanism. Harvard biologist Evan Balaban noted that finding genes for behavioral disorders is significantly more complex.
Research has largely failed to establish direct genetic causes for behaviors like depression. For instance, “Psychology Today” reported that while genetic factors may play a role, external or social influences are significant. The dramatic increase in depression rates over the past century suggests that societal changes, rather than genetics alone, are to blame.
Moreover, the environment, shaped significantly by modern entertainment and media, plays a crucial role in influencing behavior. Popular culture often glorifies violence, substance abuse, and immorality, profoundly affecting youth (John 12:31; Ephesians 6:12; Revelation 12:9, 12). The influence of such an environment, orchestrated by Satan, the “ruler of this world,” is undeniable.
The Root Cause: Original Sin and Human Responsibility
The Bible teaches that the root of human problems lies in the sin of Adam and Eve. Although their descendants are not responsible for the original sin, they inherit imperfection and mortality (Romans 5:12). This inherited sinfulness, however, does not absolve individuals of moral responsibility. Jehovah provided a way for humans to receive forgiveness and life through the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ (John 3:16; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22).
The apostle Paul expressed gratitude for this provision, recognizing that through Jesus Christ, there is deliverance from sin (Romans 7:24-25). This understanding motivated early Christians to change their lives drastically to align with God’s standards, despite the challenges of overcoming sinful tendencies (Philippians 4:13).
Responsibility and the Role of Genes
Blaming genes for misconduct is an oversimplification. While genetics may influence predispositions, it does not negate personal responsibility. “Psychology Today” highlights that attributing behavior to genes can foster a sense of helplessness, exacerbating problems rather than solving them.
Christians are encouraged to recognize their inherent sinful tendencies and the powerful influence of Satan, yet also to remember the strength available through Jehovah, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Bible (1 Peter 5:8; 1 Timothy 6:11-12; 1 John 2:1). The Bible emphasizes the importance of a trained conscience to guide moral decisions, acknowledging the deceptive nature of the human heart (Jeremiah 17:9; Genesis 6:5; 8:21).
Moses reminded the Israelites of their responsibility to choose life by loving Jehovah and adhering to His commands (Deuteronomy 30:19-20). Similarly, individuals today must decide to serve God, recognizing that they reap what they sow (Galatians 6:7-8).
Environmental Influences and Moral Choices
The environment significantly impacts behavior, often more than genetics. Modern society, influenced by Satan, presents numerous moral challenges. Entertainment media, for example, often promotes values contrary to biblical principles. This exposure shapes individuals’ attitudes and behaviors, highlighting the need for Christians to be vigilant and discerning (John 12:31; Ephesians 6:12).
Parents play a crucial role in guiding their children through this morally challenging environment. The Bible advises training a child in the way they should go, ensuring they do not depart from it when older (Proverbs 22:6). This underscores the importance of instilling godly values from a young age, countering the negative influences of the world.
Biblical Examples of Change and Responsibility
The Bible provides numerous examples of individuals who made significant changes despite challenging circumstances. The apostle Paul, for instance, underwent a dramatic transformation from persecuting Christians to becoming a devoted follower of Christ (Acts 9:1-22). This change was possible through his faith in Jehovah and reliance on His strength (Philippians 4:13).
Similarly, many today have overcome severe personal challenges by aligning their lives with biblical principles. These individuals demonstrate that, regardless of genetic predispositions or environmental influences, it is possible to live a life pleasing to God with His help.
Conclusion: Individual Accountability
Ultimately, the Bible teaches that individuals are accountable for their actions. While genetics and environment influence behavior, they do not determine it. Humans have the capacity to make moral choices and are responsible for those choices. This accountability is central to the biblical understanding of human nature and divine justice.
Each person must decide to follow Jehovah, adhering to His standards and seeking His guidance. This decision is crucial for receiving God’s approval and blessings. The Bible assures that those who put faith in Jehovah and His provisions will be able to overcome their sinful tendencies and live a life pleasing to Him (Philippians 4:13).
In sum, the pursuit of genetic explanations for behavior must be balanced with an understanding of human responsibility as outlined in the Scriptures. While science can provide insights into the influences on behavior, it cannot absolve individuals of their moral accountability before Jehovah.
