The Concept of the “Soul”
The claim by some that Jesus’ soul was active in Hades preaching to spirits while His body lay in the tomb misinterprets the Biblical understanding of what a soul is. According to the Bible, a soul is not an immaterial entity that exists apart from the physical body but rather is the whole person. Genesis 2:7 clearly states, “Jehovah God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” This indicates that a soul is synonymous with a living being; thus, when a person dies, the soul ceases to exist. Ezekiel 18:4 reinforces this by saying, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
Understanding of the “Spirit”
Similarly, the concept of “spirit” (Hebrew ruach and Greek pneuma) refers not to an immortal essence of a human but to the life force that animates living beings. This is evident from Psalms 146:4, which states, “His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.” This suggests that the spirit is the breath of life, which returns to God upon death, leaving the body lifeless.
Reinterpretation of 1 Peter 3:18-20
Regarding the specific passage in 1 Peter 3:18-20, which discusses Jesus preaching to the spirits in prison, this should not be understood as Jesus moving around as a disembodied spirit. Rather, this passage is metaphorically describing Jesus’ proclamation of victory over sin and death through His resurrection, which heralds judgment over the disobedient spirits — a declaration of His triumph over all powers of rebellion. The term “spirits in prison” refers to those angelic beings who were disobedient during the time of Noah, now restrained by God (2 Peter 2:4, Jude 6).
Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
When Jesus declared on the cross, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit” (Luke 23:46), He was committing His life force into the care of God, trusting that God would resurrect Him. This aligns with Acts 2:32, where Peter attests that God raised Jesus from the dead, vindicating His trust. His resurrection was a bodily resurrection, as shown by His appearances to His disciples where He ate and interacted with them (Luke 24:39-43).
The Nature of Jesus’ Resurrected Body
Post-resurrection, Jesus demonstrated that He had a physical body, though it was a glorified one. This is important because it underscores the reality of His resurrection. When He appeared to Thomas, He bore the physical marks of crucifixion, which served to confirm His identity and the physical reality of His resurrection (John 20:27).
Conclusion on Biblical Teachings
The Biblical text does not support the idea of the soul as an immortal entity existing independently of the body, nor does it indicate that Jesus was preaching in Hades in a disembodied form. Instead, Scripture consistently teaches that death is a state of unconsciousness, and resurrection is the hope of life after death. Jesus’ own resurrection is the firstfruits of this future resurrection, promising eternal life to those who are in Christ (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).
