Edward D. Andrews stands as a formidable figure in the field of conservative evangelical scholarship, particularly within the disciplines of New Testament textual criticism, early Christianity, and biblical translation. He serves as the Chief Translator of the Updated American Standard Version (UASV), a literal and accurate translation grounded in the most trustworthy original-language texts available. He is also the CEO and President of Christian Publishing House (CPH), a publishing ministry devoted to producing biblical, theological, apologetic, and Christian living materials that are entirely consistent with the inerrancy and infallibility of Scripture.
Andrews is not only an established scholar but a prolific author, having written and published over 220 books focused on biblical studies, textual criticism, theology, Christian apologetics, and biblical languages. His writing reflects a staunch commitment to the historical-grammatical method of interpretation, a rejection of liberal-critical methodologies, and a devotion to the final authority of the inspired Word of God.

Scholarly Foundations and Academic Rigor
Edward D. Andrews holds advanced degrees in biblical studies and theology and has specialized training in Koine Greek and Hebrew. His scholarly pursuit focuses heavily on New Testament textual criticism, the discipline devoted to analyzing and reconstructing the original Greek text of the New Testament. In this work, Andrews aligns with a rigorous evangelical view that the original manuscripts (autographs) of Scripture were inerrant and that the preserved Greek New Testament, particularly the Nestle-Aland 28th edition and the United Bible Societies 5th edition, is 99.99% accurate to those originals.
Andrews’ critical methodology rejects the presuppositions of the Historical-Critical Method, which undermines the authority of the text by elevating subjective human reasoning over the inspired Scriptures. Instead, he employs a consistent historical-grammatical approach that honors the divine inspiration of the Word of God and interprets Scripture within its own historical and linguistic context. This conservative method ensures that every theological assertion, doctrinal teaching, and exegetical insight is fully rooted in what the Bible actually says, not what modern scholarship wishes it said.

The UASV Bible Translation
As Chief Translator of the Updated American Standard Version (UASV), Andrews has overseen a translation that seeks to maintain the literal accuracy and grammatical clarity of the American Standard Version of 1901 while updating the language to modern English. The UASV avoids dynamic equivalence and paraphrase in favor of formal equivalence, or word-for-word translation, to preserve the inspired meaning of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.
The UASV consistently renders the Tetragrammaton (יהוה) as “Jehovah” throughout the Old Testament, aligning with the principle that God’s personal name should not be replaced with a title like “the LORD.” The New Testament of the UASV is based on the most accurate Greek critical texts available today, and all translation choices are informed by the work of faithful scribes, extensive manuscript evidence, and the practice of careful textual criticism that seeks to recover the original words of the apostles and prophets.
Andrews has contributed detailed commentary and textual notes to the UASV, offering readers a clear and doctrinally sound understanding of each passage. This translation is intended not only for public reading and private study but also for use in expository preaching and academic instruction.

Authority in New Testament Textual Criticism
Edward D. Andrews is one of the few conservative scholars today actively engaged in the textual critical field without compromising biblical inerrancy. He acknowledges the existence of over 5,800 Greek New Testament manuscripts and the rich diversity of textual traditions represented within them, yet he holds that through the providence of God, the original readings have been preserved across the manuscript tradition and can be identified through sound principles of textual criticism.
He is critical of both the Byzantine priority view (as seen in Textus Receptus advocates) and liberal eclecticism. Instead, Andrews argues for a reasoned, evidence-based eclecticism that weighs both internal and external evidence, manuscript quality, geographical distribution, and scribal habits. His method places heavy emphasis on the earliest manuscripts, especially the Alexandrian text-type, while remaining vigilant for scribal tendencies that may have introduced variants.
In his books and articles, Andrews frequently exposes the dangers of theological bias in textual criticism and calls scholars back to a God-honoring and Scripture-submissive practice of restoring the original text. He holds that there is no doctrinal uncertainty or essential teaching of Scripture affected by any genuine textual variant and that God has preserved His Word faithfully through the centuries.

Early Christianity and the Apostolic Church
Andrews’ academic focus also extends to the study of early Christianity, especially the first-century apostolic church. His research and writings prioritize the historical context of the New Testament Church as established by Christ and His apostles. He highlights the simplicity and doctrinal purity of the early church, opposing both the traditions of post-apostolic ecclesiastical development and the revisionist narratives proposed by liberal theologians.
He defends the historical reliability of Acts and the Pauline epistles as accurate portrayals of the early Christian community and contends that ecclesiastical and doctrinal corruption entered the church only after the death of the apostles in the late first century. In this regard, he upholds the 27-book New Testament canon as completed and closed by the end of the first century, with Revelation being written around 96 C.E.
Edward D. Andrews maintains that all believers—whether pastors, teachers, or laymen—must return to the apostolic teachings found in the New Testament, rejecting later traditions, creeds, councils, or denominational innovations that distort the pure doctrine of Christ.

Good piece. Everyone has a story to tell; you came from a recess in darkness that I was, fortunately, never compelled to live.
Question regarding “inerrancy in the originals” 1) We do not possess any originals 2) We do not agree on what is original. 3) Inerrancy has been redefined by most scholars 4) How can Paul correct himself midstream about baptisms if there is no error? How can he distinguish between his advice and “the word of the Lord” if we Christians are not supposed to make the same distinctions? If we cannot be honest with ourselves, our witness is greatly diminished. Thanks! <
Well, you are mistaken on the first two concerns. We do not have the originals, but we do not need them if we know what the original words were. There are many dozens of world renowned textual scholars between 1650 and the present who have given their entire lives to restoring the original words of the original texts. We now have 5,898 Greek NT manuscripts, with a good number dating within decades of the originals and into the third century CE. It culminated in 1881 with the Westcott and Hort (WH) Greek NT text. The 1881 WH Greek text is 99.5% the same as the 2012 28th edition of the Nestle-Aland Greek NT. This is the case even though in the middle of the 20th century we found many papyri NT manuscripts that dated within decades of the originals. Those papyri validated what a great job WH did in the 20 years they worked on their Greek NT (1861-1881). Between the 188 WH text and the 2012 NA text, we have a restored text of 99.99% reflection of the originals. And you are mistaken when you say that no one agrees. Almost all NT textual scholar agree almost 100% since 1881. It is just a handful of King James Version Onlyists that do not agree as they are stuck in 1611 worshiping the KJV. Yes, the meaning of inerrancy was twist by liberal scholarship, so conservatives just qualify the word, “absolute inerrancy.” Paul and Jesus are in perfect harmony. The NT authors were in perfect harmony. You must be reading some liberal scholarship.
