We are told at Genesis 1:27 that “God created man in his own image.” However, Genesis 3:22 tells us “the man has become like one of us.” It seems that Genesis 1:27 is saying that humans were made like God, while Genesis 3:22 is saying that humans became like God.
The answer lies in the fact that we are dealing with two different subject matters, and to look at the two together isolated from their individual sections is to take them out of context. Genesis 1 is dealing with the creation of humanity, and that we were made in the image of God, something we were given. Genesis 3 is dealing with man’s fall into sin, and his willful rebellion against God, rejecting God’s sovereignty, God’s standard of right and wrong. In this, Adam and Eve had acquired the right to become like God in determining for themselves what is right and what is wrong. Genesis 1 is prior to the fall, refers to the nature of Adam and Eve, while Genesis 3 is after the fall, and refers to their state of being.
