Has anyone ever noticed when science and the Bible are at odds with each other, it is automatically assumed that the Bible is wrong and science is right? Liberal and moderate Bible scholars will look for natural ways for the Bible to agree with science. Yet, when science grows over the years, it discovers that the Bible was right all along. Scientists and liberal scholars bury their heads in the sand as though science did not end up being wrong, while the Bible had been right for thousands of years. Does modern science make you feel unsure about the trustworthiness of Scripture?

world_earthJob 26:7 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

“He stretches out the north over empty space
and hangs the earth on nothing.

Isaiah 40:22 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 40:18 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

18 To whom then will you liken God,
or what likeness compare with him?

While the Bible is not a scientific textbook, it is accurate when it speaks to those subjects. While it is true that the earth is not a perfect circle, is the precise dimension what the author intended to convey? First, we must understand the level the Bible intends to be exact in what is written. If Jim told a friend that 650 graduated with him from high school in 1984, it is not challenged, because it is clear he is using estimated numbers and does not mean to be precise. This is how God’s Word operates, as well.

Acts 2:41 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.[1]

Numbers within the Bible are often used with approximations. This is a frequent practice even today, in written works and verbal conversation. While Bible writers had no Google Earth or had not been able to see the earth from the moon, they were accurate with their descriptions, unlike other myths and legends.

In The Beginning

According to atheists, “the universe is as it is, mysteriously, and it just happens to permit life,” explains Paul Davies. “Had it been different,” atheists say, “we would not be here to argue about it. The universe may or may not have a deep underlying unity, but there is no design, purpose, or point to it all—at least none that would make sense to us.” “The advantage of this position,” notes Davies, “is that it is easy to hold—easy to the point of being a cop-out,” or a convenient way to avoid facing the issue.

In his book Evolution: A Theory in Crisis, molecular biologist Michael Denton concluded the theory of evolution “is more like a principle of medieval astrology than a serious . . . scientific theory.” He also referred to Darwinian evolution as one of the greatest myths of our time.

The appeal to luck as the first cause does smack of myth. Imagine this: An archaeologist sees a rough stone that is somewhat square. He may attribute that shape to chance, which would be reasonable. But later he finds a stone that is perfectly formed in the shape of a human bust, down to the finest details. Does he attribute this item to chance? No. His logical mind says, “Someone made this.” Using similar reasoning, the Bible states: “Every house is constructed by someone, but he that constructed all things is God.” (Heb. 3:4) Do you agree with that statement?

“The more we get to know about our universe,” writes Lennox, “the more the hypothesis there is a Creator God, who designed the universe for a purpose, gains in credibility as the best explanation of why we are here.”

The Resilient Earth

The Orbit of the Earth

The Earth must orbit (the path through which the Earth travels around the Sun) at the precise distance from the sun, in order to avoid extremes of temperature. Other solar systems have planets that orbit stars like ours. These are in what we call the “habitable zone,” which means that they are able to sustain liquid water. Nevertheless, these alleged habitable planets are highly unlikely to be able to support human life like earth. Being in the so-called “habitable zone” is not enough, they would have to also rate at the right speed and be the precise size.

The precision of the earth in relations to everything in the solar system is what makes life possible. If our earth were a tiny fraction smaller and lighter, the gravitational force would be weakened to the point that much of our precious atmosphere would simply flow into space. The truth of this is seen when we look at our moon and the two smaller planets Mercury (approximately 38% the diameter of Earth) and Mars (slightly more than half the size of Earth). Both of them have little or no atmosphere. While it is true that Mercury and Mars are substantially smaller than earth, life would be inhabitable on earth with even the minutest change in its size. This holds true as well, if the earth were even slightly larger, which would make the gravitational force even stronger, causing light gasses like hydrogen and helium, resulting in their taking far longer to escape from the atmosphere, which would throw the delicate balance between the gases of earth’s atmosphere out of balance. Consider just oxygen, a colorless odorless gas that is the most abundant element, forms compounds with most others, is essential for plant and animal respiration, and is necessary in most cases for combustion. If its level were to increase by a mere one percent, we would have far more forest fires. Then again, if the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide were to increase above the normal fluctuations (parts per million), the earth would overheat.[2]

Remember all of the stats that we had to learn about in earth science class. They are in relation to everything in our solar system. For example, what the earth’s moon was slightly bigger? The moon and Earth are a system, which is part of a bigger relationship. The gravitational pull of earth affects the moon and the gravitational pull of the moon affects the earth. This would result in much more than the flowing and ebbing of the tides. It would actually affect the tilt of the earth. The moon has a gravitational hold of the earth, which prevents the earth from tilting too far. The tilt of the earth is the angle of the earth from which the heat from the sun hits us, which gives earth a very remarkably stable climate, making life as we know it able to exist.

solar system orbit_02We can look at another facet of the orbit of the earth (travel around the Sun). We would suffer intolerable excesses of temperature if the orbit were more elliptic. Instead, the orbit of the earth is nearly a perfect circle. If any part of our fine-tuned solar system were out of sync, like if Jupiter were to pass nearby, there would be drastic changes, we would be in grave trouble. Jason Lisle writes, “Earth is tilted on its axis 23.4 degrees relative to its orbit around the sun. This causes Earth to experience seasons. From late March to late September, Earth is in the part of its orbit where its North Pole is tilted toward the sun. Those of us who live in the northern hemisphere observe that the sun appears higher in the sky than it does at other times, and we experience more hours of daylight. Since we receive greater accumulated solar energy at this time of year, our temperatures are warmer than they are in other seasons. From late September through late March, Earth is in the part of its orbit where the North Pole is tipped away from the sun. During this time, the southern hemisphere receives more heat and light from the sun, while northern hemisphere inhabitants see the sun lower in the sky and experience less than 12 hours of daylight. The seasons are not caused by the slightly elliptical orbit of Earth. On the contrary, Earth is slightly closer to the sun in the northern hemisphere winter. This tilt appears to be well-designed for life. If Earth were tilted less, the polar regions would receive less energy, reducing the habitable area of the planet. If the earth were tilted more, the seasons would become more extreme, potentially reducing plant-growing seasons and making the environment less hospitable.”[3] Are we to accept that our fine-tuned solar system just came about by mere chance?

solar system orbit

We find another marvelous feature in our fine-tuned solar system. The giant planets Jupiter (diameter is eleven times bigger than Earth), Saturn (diameter is nine times bigger than Earth), Uranus (diameter is four times bigger than Earth), and Neptune (seventeen times as much mass compared to the Earth) orbit the sun at a safe distance from earth. These giant planets are no threat to earth. Rather, they are more like the guardians of the earth. Astronomers have likened them to “celestial vacuum cleaners.” The gravitational pull of these giants pulls in any meteors that might threat earth. God challenged Job, “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.” (Job 38:4) The Creator founded the relationship of our solar system precisely setting the size and position of the earth.

The preciseness of Oxygen and the Complexities of Photosynthesis

Oxygen atoms make up sixty-three percent of the weight of living organisms here on earth. Terrestrial plants and animals are protected from the sun’s ultraviolet rays by oxygen in the upper atmosphere. Yet, oxygen is swift to react with other elements, for instance, when it reacts with iron and causes rust. So, how does the atmosphere keep its twenty-one percent level of this highly reactive element?

photosynthesis_03

The answer is photosynthesis, a process by which green plants and certain other organisms use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide and water into the simple sugar glucose. In so doing, photosynthesis provides the basic energy source for virtually all organisms. An extremely important byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen, on which most organisms depend. Photosynthesis is a very complex process, and for the sake of convenience and ease of understanding, plant biologists divide it into two stages. In the first stage, the light-dependent reaction, the chloroplast traps light energy and converts it into chemical energy contained in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), two molecules used in the second stage of photosynthesis. In the second stage, called the light-independent reaction (formerly called the dark reaction), NADPH provides the hydrogen atoms that help form glucose, and ATP provides the energy for this and other reactions used to synthesize glucose. These two stages reflect the literal meaning of the term photosynthesis, to build with light. Photosynthesis has far-reaching implications. Like plants, humans and other animals depend on glucose as an energy source, but they are unable to produce it on their own and must rely ultimately on the glucose produced by plants. Moreover, the oxygen humans and other animals breathe is the oxygen released during photosynthesis.”[4]

photosynthesis

In short, without photosynthesis, the earth would soon not be able to replenish its food supply, and it would eventually become devoid of oxygen and life. With all of the scientific knowledge that we have acquired, it takes pages in a science textbook just to explain how photosynthesis works. Some steps in that process are not even fully understood today. The evolutionist struggles to explain how each of the steps in the process evolved from something simpler. Truly, each of the steps appears to be incapable of being reduced to something less complex. Is the not fully understood complexities of photosynthesis invented by chance of a few cells?

From Single Cells to Multicellular Man

Human Cell

Romans 1:20 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

20 For his [God’s] invisible attributes are clearly seen from the creation of the world,  being perceived through what has been made, even his eternal power and divine nature, so that they are without excuse.

What is the likelihood that atoms happen chanced to gather to form the simplest self-reproducing cell? A Guided Tour of the Living Cell, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Christian de Duve admits, “If you equate the probability of the birth of a bacterial cell to that of the chance assembly of its component atoms, even eternity will not suffice to produce one for you.” The forward of Dr. Jeffrey Tomkins says,

The design and the Complexity of the CellThe functions within the cells of our bodies are foundational to our existence. Understanding these functions has made the environment and the processes of our lifestyles healthier, more enjoyable, and more productive. All of humanity has benefited from the life sciences and the scientists who have dedicated their considerable skills to uncovering the functions and processes of the multifaceted variety of cells.

Although scientists have discovered, documented, and developed wonderful insights about the complex information, precise sequential processes, and unique interwoven controls within cells, there is a huge chasm among scientists when they try to understand how these highly efficient processes got started in the first place.

The majority of scientifically trained biologists and geneticists are taught that the apparent design that is observed in cells is the result of only random chemical and energy processes operating over eons of time. Such a belief system prompts their thinking to rest on purely natural logic, producing materialistic conclusions— and often ignoring or marginalizing the implications of careful engineering and design.

There are, however, multiple thousands of scientists who accept the Bible’s message that there is a Creator who planned the creation, designed the intricate engineering efficiencies into that creation, and then built the product: our planet and its wonderfully unique life and functions. That belief system not only fits empirically with what is observed (design, precise function, operational efficiencies, etc.), but provides insight that enables creation-based scientists to grasp the significance of the information more readily—without having to invent a supposed eons-long story for the development of what is actually observed. Dr. Jeffrey Tomkins and his contributing colleagues have provided an excellent resource that will document and help explain the intricate processes of cells and give some keen insight for “clearly seeing” the obvious hand of the Creator in the “things that are made” (Romans 1:20).

Was It Simply by Chance?

When we think about all of the complexities that science has discovered within our universe, many scientists are moving from chance to design, which means a Creator. If something as simple as a human bust of a person’s head suggests design, the complexities of the human body, our solar system, and the university are screaming design/creation. The mathematician and astronomer David Block says, “We live in a very finely tuned universe … Our universe is a home. Designed, I believe, by the hand of God.” The Bible describes the Creator, “It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.”―Jeremiah 51:15.

[2] Global warming enthusiasts believe that the earth is progressively overheating because of the increase in carbon dioxide levels since the mid-19th century when humans began to burn ever-larger amounts of coal, gas, and oil. However, global warming, which more accurately could be termed global temperature fluctuation (GTF), is due particularly to our sun’s variability. The temperature of the earth constantly fluctuates. As Christians we should care for our planet as best we can as individuals. However, this author believes that the global warming enthusiasts have turned their pseudo-science into a religion, and a radical one at that.
