We Do Not Reproach Our Friends
Psalm 15 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
A Psalm of David.
15 O Jehovah, who may be a guest in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy mountain?
3 who does not slander with his tongue
and does no evil to his neighbor,
nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
Bringing reproach on another is criticizing him or her to another for something they may have done wrong. Each of us makes mistakes, and we would hope that our friends would overlook these small imperfect moments in our lives. It is ironic if we make a mistake, we hope the friend ignores it and does not share it with others. However, when others are the ones that make a mistake, we can be quick to share that moment of imperfection with others. There are some in the Christian congregation, who will share minor embarrassing weaknesses of others, to sidestep their own issues, or to build themselves up while tearing down others. However, this type of spirit does not belong to a friend of God, who throws our transgressions into the sea ( so that they are so far down that they will never be seen again). One who casts our transgressions as far off as the sunrise is from the sunset (the greatest distance possible), who throws our transgressions behind his back (so he is unable to see them).–Micah 7:19; Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 38:17
Proverbs 17:9 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
9 Whoever covers a transgression seeks love,
but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.
On Proverbs 17:9, Max Anders writes, “When someone has committed an offense against you or some third party, you have two options available: cover it over by a discreet silence or publicize it through gossip and complaint. Your choice affects more than just yourself. Covering the offense promotes love by maintaining an atmosphere of trust; the person who repeats the matter stirs up suspicion, even among close friends.”
