We Do Not Slander With Our Tongue

Psalm 15 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

A Psalm of David.

15 O Jehovah, who may be a guest[1] in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy mountain?

who does not slander with[2] his tongue
and does no evil to his neighbor,
nor takes up a reproach against his friend;

To slander someone is to say something false or malicious (intentionally harmful) that damages somebody’s reputation. The Hebrew verb ragal is a reference to the lowest part of the leg, the body part upon which a person or animal stands, the foot (regel). It is used both literally and figuratively. It has the meaning “to foot it,” in other words, “to go about.” The Israelites were commanded, “You shall not go about with slander among your people.” (Lev. 19:16) We are robbing a person of his good name if we slander him, deliberately trying to do harm to his or her reputation. We can help to bring slander to a halt, by refusing to listen to it, and especially not spreading it on to another. If it is of such paramount importance that we control our speech, is it not, much more important that we control what we do?
