The Power of Listening

Romans 12:15 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

THE CHRISTIAN APOLOGISTIt is when we show a genuine deep interest in others that we will be able to start Bible discussions and reach people with the Word of God. It is when we sincerely listen compassionately to others that we will give these ones the opportunity to tell us why they need the Word of God in their lives, which puts us in a much better position of sharing the Gospel with them. If you have spent any time around Christians who are effective in sharing the Word of God, you likely noticed that they are skilled listeners. (Prov. 20:5) You likely noticed that they show a real interest in the people that they come across in their daily lives. They take note of their interests and needs. If the person they are talking to shows a specific concern, they will do Bible research and get back to that one with what they discovered because they will have gathered their contact information in the initial conversation. Like the apostle Paul, Christians who are effective at sharing the Word of God, they know how to reach the heart (inner person) of those they meet. (1 Cor. 9:19-23) Such sincere interest appeals to people and attracts them to the good news and reflects “the tender mercy of our God”—Luke 1:78.
