Cultivating Genuine Humility
James 4:10 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
10 Humble yourselves in the eyes of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Our sinful imperfect human nature desires undue glory. As we all have descended from the rebellious sinful Adam and Eve, both having given into their selfish cravings. (Rom. 5:12) Another reason that we may find it difficult to show our humility is that we live in a world where we are surrounded by imperfect humans who are alienated from God, who also seeking glory and superiority. Fallen humanity was described by the apostle John this way, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.” (1 John 2:16) We as disciples of Jesus Christ are to keep our eyes simple and focus on doing the will of the Father. (Matt. 6:22-24, 31-33; 1 John 2:17) Yet, another reason why we as Christians still struggle with cultivating and displaying humility is that we are the primary target of the god of this world, Satan the Devil, the originator of haughtiness. Satan encourages, furthers, and advances his wicked traits. – 2 Cor. 4:4; 1 Tim. 3:6.
