If You Stumble Stay In The Race
Proverbs 24:16 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
16 for a righteous man falls seven times and rises again,
but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
Some Christians have stumbled into minor sin, even repeatedly, because of some human weakness. However, they are still righteous in God’s eyes if they continue to ‘rise again,’ that is if they sincerely repent and strive to resume a course of being a loyal servant of God. We see this illustrated repeatedly by the way God dealt with the ancient Israelites. (Isa. 41:9-10 Proverbs 24:16 concentrates on the positive, our ‘rising up’ with the help of our merciful God. (Isa. 55:7) Our heavenly Father and the Son lovingly encourage us to ‘rise up.’ (Ps. 86:5; John 5:19) Even if a runner stumbles or falls in a marathon, all is not lost, he or she may have enough time to recover and finish the race if he or she acts with earnestness, resolve, and perseverance. In our race for eternal life, Christians do not know the “day and hour” when the end of the race will come. (Matt. 24:36) Still, the less we stumble, the more likely it is that we will maintain a steady pace, stay in the race, and finish it successfully.
